This week, we celebrate the anniversary of In a Vase on Monday, a meme that has delighted us over many years. Cathy’s request this week is for arrangements made without flowers, perfect for my post-frost and post-snowy November garden.
Twigs of Fothergilla are joined by seed heads of Miscanthus, Pennisetum and Monarda. Beautyberry (Callicarpa) berries add bright purple, along with burgundy foliage of Oakleaf Hydrangea (H. quercifolia), evergreen Barrenwort (Epimedium) and multi-colored Gooseneck Loosestrife (Lysimachia clethroides).
In A Vase on Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. Click the link to see arrangements made by other gardeners around the world.

No flowers but spectacular all the same 🙂
Thank you, Andrea. It was a fun challenge. 🙂
Amazing how you managed to create this autumn beauty with no flowers. Gorgeous, Eliza!
Thank you very much, Marina! x
🤗😘
You are very talented arranging all the textures and colors!
Thank you very much, Alice! 🙂
Andrea wrote, “spectacular” and I so agree!
Thank you, Gary!
Oh, I like that! So very evocative of fall.
Thank you, Laurie. A bit of autumn on our table!
There is extraordinary beauty in the fall foliage, grasses & remains of summer flowers. Plus they have the added benefit of often lasting in the vase much longer than fresh blooms would. And the subtle colors are wonderful!
Thank you! I do love using fall foliage in a vase (esp. that gorgeous burgundy hydrangea) and it’s true, they do for weeks. 🙂
Very creative and lovely arrangement – wonderful pictures!
Thank you, Meg!
Ah, I wondered if you would keep going with no flowers in the garden. I love this arrangement, autumn and winter brings a whole new dimension. We can’t buy flowers at the supermarket any more now with covid, but you have inspired me to see what I can find in the hedgerows. I’m hopeless at arranging so it won’t be a patch on yours! MaryJane
Thank you, MJ. Gosh, if they pull flowers off our grocery shelves, I’m going to suffer mightily this winter. I hope it doesn’t come to that here.
But out in nature, there are lots of twigs, berries and dried bits that make nice arrangements. Half the fun is the meditative walking and collecting. Post what you come up with!
This is very pretty.
Thank you kindly, Carol. 🙂
No flowers, one of my favorite types of arrangements, vert creative
opps very not vert!
Thank you, Karen! 🙂
How I envy the Callicarpa berries! The burgundy leaves of the oakleaf hydrangea are fabulous too. I’m not surprised that your garden has vase-suitable fall/winter delights to offer.
Thanks, Kris! ‘Winter interest’ gets a lot of attention in this climate! 😉
An inspiration to us all, Eliza and a reminder that there is plenty of natural beauty around besides flowers.
Thank you, Anne. With a dormant period here running 5-6 months, one learns to see beauty in nature beyond the verdant and floral. 😉
So inventive! Love it 💕
Thank you, Val! 🙂
You are so creative, I love it!
Thank you, Donna!
It was an interesting assignment. I don’t participate, but I view many of them. It took until the second post to realize what it was an assignment.
Thank you. Cathy usually presents a challenge for her anniversary edition. It is fun to see what others come up with.
Creative and beautiful 🌸
🙂 Thank you, Karen!
Still beautifully arranged, even without the flowers. Maybe more so in the way your creativity expresses the simplicity and colors of the season. 🙂
Thank you, Robin! ❤
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you, Karina! 🙂
Eliza, this just proves you don’t have to put flowers in a vase for the arrangement to be strikingly lovely!!
Thank you kindly, Debbie! 🙂
Knockout combo! I wasn’t familiar with burgundy hydrangea or blue beauty berry–very cool.
Thank you, Ellen! I love Oakleaf Hydrangea’s fall color – it is stunning.
The Hydrangea leaf really had me foxed at first! Love the foliage you have used and the berries add some pretty extra colour. 😃
Thank you, Cathy. It was a good challenge to come up with a vase with no flowers, esp. in my current garden.
Who needs flowers? 🙂 The arrangement is beautiful, Eliza.
Thank you, Mike!
Thank you for rising to the challenge of a bloom free vase, Eliza, although in your post-frost and post-snow garden you won’t have had some of the lingering distractions that others have had! When I started the meme, I wondered how I would get through the winter with a weekly vase, but of course it has never proved to be a problem, and your vase has shown just what a range of material might be available. I particularly like the Fothergilla twigs, pulling the rest of the contents toegther
Thank you, Cathy. I appreciate your hosting this meme all these years. It’s a good one!
You are very welcome, Eliza
I always enjoy seeing your arrangements Eliza. I too like the way you’ve used the autumn hydrangea at the base. The vase itself is perfect too. Happy IAVOM anniversary.
Thank you very much, Susie!
Every bit as appealing as flowers!
Thank you, Sandy!
Sure!
So pretty set off by one of your beautiful vases!
Thank you, Belinda!
Beautiful, even without flowers! 😊💚
Thank you, Betty! 🙂
Dried plant arrangements are lovely as well…especially in the hands of an artist. 🙂
🙂 Thanks much, Steve!
Beautiful, and I really like the color theme.
Thank you, Judy. It was fun scavenging in the garden to see what I could come up with!
Amazing Flower Vase. I like.
Thank you!
I love this Eliza, a beautiful arrangement. Is that Hydrangea quercifolia ‘ Burgundy’? Callicarpa is fabulous isn’t it?
Thank you, Liz. The Hydrangea is at least 15 years old, tag long gone, and probably never was recorded in my notes, alas. I do love the Callicarpa, as it is a standout this time of year. We are at the northern end of its range, so it often dies to the ground in winter, and has to regrow every spring, but it is stalwart!
Very interesting and eye-catching this creative collection for the vase – it comes together most pleasingly and is an unusual celebration of autumn.
Thank you, Carol. Yes, it’s a little handful of autumn. 🙂
That is so well put together Eliza, love the forms and contrast of all the material. Congratulations and Happy Anniversay.
Thank you, Noelle, these challenges are fun to do.
Love how you captured the beauty of November, especially the burgundy hydrangea!🙂
Thank you, S!
No flowers, but definitely stunning. 🙂
Thank you, Joanne!
So pretty! I love the burgundy colored leaves and the plum colored berries. A beautiful work of art.
Thank you kindly, Barbara!
Very nice. I particularly love the form of the fothergilla twigs.
Thank you, Allison. We had our roof replaced, and those twigs were casualties, so waste not! 😉
Beautiful! It feels like late fall. Probably from your garden? There are also so many interesting dried plants in the forest this time of year.
Yes, all from my yard. ‘No Flowers’ was a perfect challenge for me at this time of year. Thanks much!
Never thought that a vase without flowers could be so pretty. 💙😊
Aw, thanks much, Irene. 🙂
My pleasure. 😊
Always happy to see your captures Eliza ! A lot of texture in these
Thank you, Harold, much appreciated!
