    Besides being in a beautiful photo, I just looked up JPW…it is a host plant to over 60 kinds of native moth and butterfly caterpillars…now I really wish I had some growing here!

    I’ve only seen this in east Texas; it’s an impressive plant. The ones I found were much taller than me, so they had to be eight feet tall! They were loaded with blooms, and covered with nearly as many bees.

    Magenta vs. yellow.

    Near vs. far.

    Sharp vs. out-of-focus.

    I see online that “Eutrochium purpureum is a tall, native herbaceous perennial in the daisy family (Asteraceae) known for its vanilla-scented, pinkish-purple flower clusters that attract a wide variety of pollinators.”

    Have you detected that vanilla scent?

    so beautiful and right now as i type this there are 2 monarchs and one red admiral butterfly on the joe pye weed in our yard. thanks for sharing this great flower! and sorry i can no longer post on the site! pat

    I have just been rereading Robin wall Kimmerer’s braiding sweet grass. And in the very beginning she talks about how the magic of Goldenrod and Aster, the gold and the purple, captivated her as a child and nudged her on the path to botany.
