  1. What an understatement!
Recently in the shade on my verandah at Apollo Bay on the south-eastern coast of Australia, the thermometer was reading 48C (118F).

    • Eliza Waters says:

Oh, Lord, night and day! I’d gladly send you some of our ice if I could, John!

    • Vicki says:

Gosh, John, that’s must be suffocating (compared to us here in Melbourne). Take care and rehydrate regularly. 🙂

      • Vicki, I imagine many Melbourne residential shaded areas would have recorded temperatures around 48C on the day on the day in question. An accurate thermometer reading in the shade (ours was recorded under a shade tent) is not to be confused with the official BoM temperature for an area. Temperatures in the sun that day would of course have been well over 50C in Melbourne. So I’d say AB and Melbourne had very similar conditions that day.

  2. Amazing photo! Stay warm, Eliza. 💗

  3. Now that is major icing! Guess I should be grateful for our mild winter thus far.

  4. Tazzie says:

I am reconsidering wanting to live in a much colder climate. What a stunning capture.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Tazzie. It isn’t so bad so long as one dresses appropriately. Felt-lined boots, down coat and scarf, hat and mittens make walks possible. We get out every day regardless of weather. It is invigorating, but always happy to get back to our snug home! It is easier to warm up in winter than cool down in a hot climate. 😉

  5. Dang…I had to put on a sweater today…46 F

  6. arlingwoman says:

Winter returned to us as well, Eliza. Are you getting the snow from the western storm? It looks cold enough without snow!

    • Eliza Waters says:

Yes, we got about 3″ of very fine and dry snow, packed by wind. Cleanup won’t take long, thankfully. Might break freezing today, but I guess for the next week, the cold will continue. January in New England!

  7. Karen Lang says:

I was at a waterfall this morning Eliza! Didn’t quite look like yours. Very cold and yet beautiful 🙂

  8. Kris P says:

You’re not kidding. I shivered just looking at the photo.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Single digits and teens for a few days can make a huge difference on our waterways. It has been very brisk walking these days! I love my down coat beyond words. 😉

  9. sandyjwhite says:

Brrr….I can feel the chill. Great shot!

  10. Soo chilly! Awesome pic!

  11. All right. That gets a wowsah!

  12. Paulie says:

Beautiful photo but that’s just too cold. It’s 49 degrees here and I’m counting the days till May.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thanks, Paulie. Yes, even for us, it is uncomfortably cold. But it is supposed to reach 40 today…we’ll see. More cold temps on the way after that. Sigh, it is winter in New England, after all.

  13. Eliza Ayres says:

Reblogged this on Blue Dragon Journal.

  14. cindy knoke says:

    WOW Eliza! Spectacular.

  15. Oh yes, that makes me shiver! Great photo.

  16. Anne says:

It is a spectacular sight, such as I am unlikely to see here.

  17. Making the best of a cold situation. 🙂 I am sure you’d like it to warm up again. Your waterfall has become a cathedral of ice.

  18. Murtagh's Meadow says:

    It certainly is……….

  19. derrycats says:

    Brrrrrr!!! Nicely captured.

  20. Alice says:

    Frozen ‘babbling.’

  21. I follow the weather at home, and you’re caption covers it perfectly.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Yes, it has been so frigid after the warm spell last weekend. What a change. We got about 3″ of very fine, dry snow yesterday and after we get it cleaned up, the temp is said to get to 40 later. We will welcome the ‘warm up.’ 😉

  22. Tranature - quiet moments in nature says:

Wow, that looks amazing Eliza, hope you’re all keeping warm! xxx

  23. Treah Pichette says:

    It’s pretty though!

  24. Wow Eliza! That is a lot of ice! Stay Warm!

  25. Amazing, so cold! Great picture

  26. It’s a beautiful photo!

  27. Irene says:

Brrr! That looks treacherous. Watch your step, please. 😳

  28. Same conditions here, Brrr. Lovely though!

  29. Love the photo and winter looks mighty serious in your area!🙂 We finally have snow after a weekend storm, but some of the lakes are still not frozen.

  30. Oh So Cold! Pretty shot, Eliza!

  31. tippysmom2 says:

Beautiful picture. You know it’s cold when running water freezes!

  32. jillslawit says:

Beautiful but cold. Not had ice like that in a while.

  33. Jen says:

    Brrrr, but beautiful!!!

  34. naturebackin says:

Wow. Beautiful but that looks cold. I have never experienced cold like that! I like the apparently crystalline structure of the ice.

  35. dianaed14 says:

I felt quite cold but what beauty nature has created

  36. spanishwoods says:

    Wow! This is so beautiful.

  37. AmyRose🌹 says:

Took my breath away!! Wow, gorgeous capture, Eliza! I’d say it’s cold and then some! xo

  38. Jet Eliot says:

Great photo, Eliza. You really captured the frigidity brilliantly. Beautiful with the icicles and leaves frozen in the ice and the flow…but only if I don’t have to be in the cold. yikes. Stay warm, my friend, and thanks for sharing the beauty with us.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you so much, Jet. It has been bitter cold, esp. at night, this past week. A warm up is coming tomorrow – 40 degrees and rain on Saturday. That’ll change things up! Thanks for your visit. ❤

  39. Jewels says:

Whoa! So cool, Eliza! I love the way falls freeze in the wintertime.

  40. Brian Skeys says:

Stunning picture Eliza, is that close to were you live?

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Brian. Yes, it is about 50′ from my house and to be honest, was the deciding factor in purchasing this home. I HAD to own this beautiful natural water feature. It has given me great joy over the past 30 years.

  41. That really does look very cold. Still hoping for a little snow here just so I can get some photos of our cottage in the snow.

  42. willedare says:

Amazing what water can do… transforming rom flowing to frozen to flowing again in a matter of days — or even hours in some cases! Thank you for this photo. Where are you in New England? I live just outside Boston…
