White ‘Annabelle’ Hydrangea provides the basis of this week’s In a Vase on Monday hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.
While Annebelle’s large flower clusters average a foot across and don’t fit easily into most vases, I was inspired to use a few smaller heads as an anchor for orange Daylilies (Hemerocallis fulva) and cheery Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta). A few airy, grass-seed heads were added for vertical accent.
While the daylilies will fade by the end of the day, I’ll add something new tomorrow. It’s a perpetually evolving arrangement!

Eliza your flowers are always so beautiful and your arrangements are just inspiring! I love this combination and the colors together are just wonderful!
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it. 🙂
A beautifully bright arrangement.
Thank you, Anne. Monday cheer!
My favorite colors 🍁🌼
Thank you, Karen. I have quite a bit of orange/yellow this year in my cutting bed, so more coming!
👏💕💚
What a great idea to use the hydrangeas in this way. The textures go so well together.
Thank you, Sandra. They’re perfect for wide-mouthed vases for holding up stems that would otherwise flop. 🙂
I love to see your flower displays, especially now my garden is turning wilder and greener by the day!
Thank you, Anita, glad you liked it!
I’m not normally a fan of yellow flowers, but your arrangement this week is stunning. Love the strong contrasts of flower size, shape & colour 🙂 Shame about the daylilies fading, but that gives you an excuse for reinventing the arrangement all anew.
Thank you, Vicki. It’s a good excuse to play around with more flowers! 😉
Such a pretty combination of colorful flowers. 😊
Thank you, Irene!
You could have picked those right here in my yard, but I don’t have that pretty vase. Beautiful! 🙂
Thank you, Judy. The former owner planted lots of day lilies along our driveway, so I feel compelled to use them in vases even though they don’t last. They are so striking a flower.
Delicate, frothy and colourful – an uplifting arrangement Eliza.
Thank you, Andrea.
Stuffed is right—with beauty.
Hehe, thanks, Laurie!
The white really sets off those warm colors, Eliza. Lovely!
Thank you, Sandy!
My pleasure.
White clouds & bright flowers.
Oh, yes, they are like clouds! Thanks, Alice. 🙂
I really like the idea of using Annabelle as a base for other blooms – most effective! Thnks for sharing. Eliza
Thank you, Cathy!
A beautiful vase Eliza, love these colours! xxx
Thank you, Xenia!
Those fluffy Hydrangea flowers are wonderful. I love the idea of a perpetually evolving arrangement.
🙂 Keeps me busy, in a fun way! Thanks, Kris.
Lovely as all of them, and I like the square vase! The deer have feasted on all our daylilles. 😉
Thank you, Jen! Deer are SO annoying – I wish they would stay out of our gardens. 😉
Another beautiful arrangement and enjoyed the combination of the lovely Annabelle blooms surrounding the other flowers!
Thank you!
Lovely composition, Eliza! It is a shame daylilies don’t do better when cut- they always look so promising in the garden! Hope it’s cooling in MA – we have had 96-98deg with 74deg dew points over the weekend. Very uncomfortable! Power outages didn’t help! Today is a pleasant 85deg!
Thank you, Peter! Sometimes if a pick a stem with multiple buds, I’ll get a few more days out of them.
Yes, this weekend was rather trying. We lost power briefly, but it was doable. Our temp is now 66 – what a contrast!
What a good idea. I like the idea of an evolving vase and the yellow and white contrast beautifully.
Thank you, Alison. I think the next flower of the day will be zinnias. 🙂
Love those vibrant orange colours
Thank you, Karina. I have lots of orange flowers this year – went a little crazy at the nursery. 😉
So lovely! Bursting with colour and shape.
Thank you, Belinda!
Love it, Eliza and an evolving vase is very appealing. No Daylilies here and my supposedly Florida native Black Eyed Susans rolled over and died in June. So weird, and thank you as I love seeing yours and the fluffy Hydrangeas. Happy Monday.
Thank you, Amy. Maybe your BES are biennial? Mine are perpetually self-sowing, never lasting long in plant form.
Love your cheerful optimism. They tend to mold from stems up and expire. I hope there are seeds somewhere.
Beautiful combination, Eliza, and the perfect vase. I rarely cut flowers from my garden but Annabelle begs to send a few of her voluptuous heads into my wide rectangular vase throughout July.
Thank you, Lynn. I love bringing flowers in to admire up close, to brighten the room and cheer me when I’m not outside.
When A’s bracts harden and turn green, I like to dry some heads for winter use. The trick to catch them at that perfect stage before they turn brown.
The daylilies and black-eyed Susan look like they are suspended in meringue.
Haha, yes, I guess you could say that! 🙂
What a gorgeous arrangement.
Thank you, Fi!
Delightful. Love the contrast of white froth and glorious orange and yellow petals.
Thank you, Allison!
Beautiful, as always! ❤🌻
Thank you, Julie!
Beautiful! I especially like the width of the vase. It balances the large flowers perfectly.
Thank you! It is one of those vases that needs either lots of flowers or support like the hydrangea to hold things in place. 🙂
I love your flower arrangements. They are so artfully beautiful, almost as if they arranged themselves according to nature’s scheme. We have a similar hydrangea (might be the same but I’m never sure in my ID of plants and flowers).
Thank you, Robin. How kind of you to say. 🙂
Such beautiful cut flowers 🙂
Thank you!
These are just stunning!
Thank you, Mel!
Love the Hydrangea!
Thank you, Harold!
So, so pretty Eliza! I never think to put white flowers in with the yellows and oranges, but it sure does make them pop. Very nice bouquet.
Thank you, Cindy!
This one is really different and fun … LOVE it!
Thank you, Denise!
Beautiful arrangement
Thank you.
