My spider flowers (Cleome hassleriana) have grown tall, arching over paths making a prickly and sticky mess to pass by, so ‘off with their heads!’ More than a dozen of the topped flowers went into this vintage, cranberry-glass vase. Other flowers that were also tidied: Zinnia elegans, lime-green flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata), purple Verbena bonariensis and pink Chilson’s Pride’ Dahlias.

A second vase contains two Dahlias: pink ‘Chilson’s Pride’ and dark red ‘Debra Renae’ along with a funky Canna seed head that nicely picks up the color of both flowers.
