Walk Into My Parlour

“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
“‘Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to shew when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne’er come down again.”

A wonderful shot Eliza! Nature is cruel. I watched with horror the other day how a hornet attacked and devoured a bee. 😮

It is spider season! There’s one hiding among the leaves of one of my dahlias, which I managed to get excited for a moment yesterday.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Late summer is busy with spiders, particularly noticeable are the orb weavers. All are welcome in my garden, as they are both pest control and bird fodder. 😉

  19. Very nice, Eliza!. Was it a good outcome for the fly 😏

  20. shoreacres says:

This was one of the first verses I remember learning — along with the one about the itsy-bitsy spider that went up the water spout. It’s a wonderful photo and a perfect illustration for the verse.

  21. Isha Garg says:

Oh my goodness! I love this! Perfect capture! Brought back so many memories of reciting this poem in school.

  24. Murtagh's Meadow says:

It is such a lovely little poem isn’t it? It almost looks like the spider is hiding from the fly but perhaps it is just waiting to pounce!

  25. My father used to read that to us when we were kids.

  26. pbmgarden says:

It’s definitely spider season here too! Nice image.

🙂 it’s a spider-eat-spider world in my house. Quite a few Pholcidae spiders around, which look feeble but readily eat the chunky big house spiders. One of them also had the bad taste to catch and eat a fly above my desk while I was trying to work the other day.

  30. Richmond Extra says:

    Very awsome writing 🔥🤭🏵️

  31. maryjane678 says:

  33. That was so lovely!! Amazing writing!

  34. Spiders, my BIGGEST phobia! 😳 From a distance they can be interesting. But if one gets on me, have mercy, the world around knows! That being said, your clever photo and quote is perfect, Eliza! 🙂

  35. Subhraroy says:

Yes, it’s fine mention that one who goes up the spider’s winding stairs can never come down.

  36. appamprawns says:

This is so much more than just a spider and a fly piece. Awesome !!
