Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele)

Today is my 5th Blogiversary! The time seems to have flown since I nervously first hit the ‘Publish’ button all those years ago. I’ve learned a lot, made a fair number of new blogging friends and enjoyed the community blogging brings. Thanks to all who follow, like and comment, you are very much appreciated!may-july12 225

Book Share

IMG_7994There are many wonderful, unsung authors in the blogosphere and I’ve been blessed to discover a few that really capture my heart. I’ve been following Dennis Ference at Merging Traffic for a while now and his short aphorisms sum up spiritual living so succinctly, I’m often left pondering his words for hours afterwards. Reminiscent of Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet, his simple truths strike a chord.

I recently bought his book, From The Water’s Edge from Amazon, and have been savoring the delicate wisdom he shares within its pages. Divided into 365 passages, one for each day of the year, it is a great way to start or end each day with words that guide and awaken us to lead more fulfilling lives. Never preachy, they gently point the way for the seeker to find his or her own way.

kindle-ready-front-cover2This book will have a permanent place on my bookshelf and I envision my turning to it again and again in the years to come. Thank you for writing it, Dennis!

Here are just a few passages that spoke to me:

“Your story does not stand alone. It is interwoven with the stories of countless others, affected by and affecting the lives of persons you love and persons you do not even know. It is, furthermore, a page in the book of the entire universe. Name it as such and dare to claim as your own, that bigger story.”

“The road to acceptance is sometimes strewn with shards of glass.”

“A soul awakened to the divine presence within is freed to find its way to a place of peace in even the severest of life’s laments and losses.”

“Surrendering to our fears is like locking the doors and closing the blinds, peeking through the slats every few minutes to see if Death is walking our block.”

“Feeling unloved does not make you unlovable.”

“When you consider death a curtain rather than a bolted door, you are freed to participate more fully in the mystery, magic, and marvel of life.”

If your interest has been peaked, do head over to Merging Traffic for a look or visit Amazon to order your own copy of this gem of a book.*

In The Garden Today

GardenWith all the recent rain and warmth, the garden is in peak form, pleasing us and the pollinators– hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Even the goldfinches have begun to harvest Sunflower and Cosmos seeds. I love it when the garden becomes animated with their visits.

Here is a photo of me (5’5″) for scale in front of the giant Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), all self-sown from last year, and even the Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) are five feet tall. The vines on the lower left are Hyacinth Bean (Lablab purpureus) and on the right, Ivy-leaved Morning Glory (Ipomoea hederacea). They’ve begun to climb the Sunflowers, reaching for the sky.

The dahlias have begun to bloom. I thought I’d lost all my ‘Voodoo’ tubers when they froze in storage last winter, but one came through, and a new white ‘Lillehammer’ is pretty, but the stems are disappointingly short, making them not great cut-flowers.

About half of my Zinnia seedlings succumbed to slugs, but enough made it to flowering, tucked in amongst Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana alata).

Self-sown Cosmos binpinnatus ‘Sensation’ are prolific, and the Tiger Lilies (Lilium lancifolium), and pink Astilbe taquettii are looking better than in previous years. Rain helps!

So what exciting things are blooming in your garden this week?

In The Garden

GardenThe big garden is coming into its peak with both perennials and annuals providing a riot of color. Pink Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea), Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), blue Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro), fluffy pink Astilbe taquettii, blazing red Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, yellow, red and orange Daylilies (Hemerocallis), blue, pink and white Love-in-a-mist (Nigella sativa) and white Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana alata) make up the bulk of what you can see in the above photo.

With all the warmth and rain we’ve had this week, things are really looking flush. Summer is such a sweet time of year around here!
