Weekly Garden Highlights – July 8

Coral Penstemon barbatus

Coral Penstemon barbatus

Another beautiful week in the garden. The weather has been hot the past few days, a bit too dry, but thunderstorms are predicted later today through tomorrow. We need the rain!

The Tuesday View July 5

IMG_3174

July 5, 2016

This week’s garden view shows the sundrops (Oenothera fruticosa) are still going strong. On the lower right, the yellow daylily (Hemerocallis ‘Happy Returns’) has started blooming. I cut back the lamb’s ears (Stachys byzantina) flowers in front as they were blocking the view of them. Just to the left of it you can see some of the Allium azureum I’ve used in the last two Monday vases, although blue is hard to see from a distance.

The flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata) and calendula (C. officinalis) have just started to bloom (lower front left) and you can see sweet peas (Lathyrus odorata) in the upper left. In the back the sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are growing rapidly. Front and center, the coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) and globe thistle (Echinops ritro) are budded up and will soon be blooming. So stay tuned!

I’m linking up with Cathy at Words and Herbs, joining participants taking weekly photos of the same garden over the course of the growing season to note its subtle evolution. Below are some of the previous views for comparison.

In A Vase On Monday – Red, White & Blue

IMG_3164The Fourth of July is Independence Day here in the U.S. and as everyone is celebrating with fireworks and parades, my arrangement this week reflects the holiday spirit with the patriotic colors of red, white and blue.

IMG_3167For the Stars and Stripes, I have tiny white stars of lady’s bedstraw (Galium triflorum) and red and white stripes of sweet William (Dianthus barbatus), along with starbursts of Blue Allium (A. azureum).

IMG_3165Trumpets of white foxglove (Digitalis purpurea alba), foamy panicles of meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), umbels of common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and pure white sweet William contrast with bright red sweet William and my first sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus), that surprised me by being scarlet! It is the first time I have grown them (inspired by last summer’s IAVOM vases), and I am so pleased I did. They smell heavenly – thanks for the inspiration, ladies!

IMG_3166A note about the sweet William– they came with the house when we arrived 26 years ago and I expect they were planted at least 50 years ago soon after the house was built, coming back faithfully every year at the edge of the woods. Supposedly a biennial, I’ve found these to be perennial, unlike other more recent varieties I have planted.

IMG_3169The vase, fashioned to look like an old-fashioned milk can, is a thrift store find. Hard to see in the photo, but ‘MILK’ is embossed on the front.

The Tuesday View June 28

I’m linking up with Cathy at Words and Herbs where participants take weekly photos of the same garden over the course of the growing season to note its subtle evolution.

I had overhauled this bed early this spring and had taken a photo of it, thinking I would take periodic shots of it, knowing it would look drastically different by mid-summer.

I’ve shown below all the photos I’ve taken since April 1st, and will try to add a new one weekly. As most gardeners know, time tends to slip by unnoticed in the garden! I may be a bit late from time to time, but the garden doesn’t care.

In A Vase On Monday – Azure and Gold

IMG_3129AIMG_3127s highlighted in my last post, gold is predominant in my garden this week, so my vase features sundrops (Oenothera fruiticosa) and vertical spikes of Carolina lupine (Thermopsis caroliniana), along with contrasting azure globes of Allium azureum. IMG_3126

There are also gold stars of yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata) and mini-suns of Eastern daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus).

IMG_3130A few sprigs of catmint (Nepeta mussinii) and stems of common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) complete the arrangement.

IMG_3123The vase, a Brita Holmquist design, was handmade and painted in Italy and the table linen is vintage Jean Vier.

Weekly Garden Highlights – June 24

IMG_3087

Sundrops (Oenothera fruticosa) and Thermopsis villosa  in background

A review of what is happening in my garden this week:IMG_3082 IMG_3081

Mountain laurel (above), (Kalmia latifolia ‘Carousel’) is the best I’ve ever seen it and many local gardeners are reporting the same about their mountain laurel. The native white form grows in filtered light along the edges of acidic woodlands and disturbed land, such as under power lines. Some places look like great billowing mounds of snow have been dumped upon the land.

IMG_3051 IMG_3053IMG_3068

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is peaking and there is a white one in the deck garden bed that is six feet tall. I think it has found an ideal place to live!

Allium azureum (below) is looking vibrant, although the photo doesn’t quite capture its cobalt color. I have wanted to grow this bulb for years and finally got around to putting some in last fall. I’m glad I did!

To the right is one of my last peonies (Paeonia lactiflora). I’ve really enjoyed their sweet fragrance this year and will miss them when they are done blooming.

IMG_3092 IMG_3069IMG_3045The Korean dogwood (Cornus kousa) is looking great. Its blossoms look like hundreds of white butterflies have alighted on its branches.

Below is some form of Siberian iris hybrid, possibly an Japanese iris cross. I got it off a roadside cart, so have no idea its name. I love its perfect, striped buds. If anyone knows its name, please let me know.

IMG_3061And lastly, the catmint (Nepeta mussinii) is putting on a great show and the bees are loving it.

IMG_3048I’m linking up with Gillian at Country Gardens UK for her weekly ‘Looking Good’ garden showcase. Her flowers this week, as always, are looking quite beautiful!

In A Vase On Monday – Voluptuous Peonies

IMG_3032I adore the voluptuous, scented blossoms of peonies (Paeonia lactiflora) and wish their all-too-short blooming season would last longer. Today, I deadheaded the terminal buds that have gone by and now have the smaller secondary buds to enjoy.  It is supposed to be warm the next few days, so I might have only a week left.

IMG_3034 IMG_3013

This week’s arrangement has double white and bubblegum pink blooms, a semi-double in shell-pink and a rich, magenta-pink single.

IMG_3011I’ve also added a few oxeye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare) and contrasting stems of speedwell – the exquisite cobalt of Veronica ‘Crater Lake Blue.’ This is my absolute favorite speedwell!
