What a gorgeous flower. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it ‘for real,’ but every time I see a photo like this I wonder; when the fruit ripens, do you eat the slices with a runcible spoon, like the Owl and the Pussycat?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Linda. It does bear fruit that is hard like an apple (same size and full of pectin, too), but is extremely tart. A jelly would take LOTS of sugar. But the fruit in a bowl smells lovely, rather fresh, slightly citrusy.

  11. Such a pretty color. Trees are blooming everywhere here.

  12. Alice's avatar Alice says:

We had a few bushes, in a field, behind our other house…40 + years ago…to me the color is salmony. 3:15, yesterday, saw a male Hummy on a feeder & again a little while later. Not today. I called my daughter to tell her…within a short time they had their 1st Male Baltimore Oriole eating jelly…she took a great video & then a video of their 1st Hummy…which seems to be a female!

  14. Exquisite! What are they?

  15. Love Quince, do you get fruit?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Occasionally, but I keep my hedge trimmed down, so not that many. They will germinate seedlings, so I try to gather them when found.

      • Quince jelly is a thing in the South, my grandmother loved it.

      • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

This from the web: “The Latin name for the true quince tree, which produces the fruit traditionally used for high-quality jelly and membrillo, is Cydonia oblonga (also cited as Cydonia oblongata).

While the flowering quince (Chaenomeles japonica) can be used for jelly, it yields a sharper taste and requires more sugar; therefore, the true quince (Cydonia oblonga) is considered the superior variety for traditional preserves.”

      • When I was in college…..C.speciosa was planted in gardens and used for jelly. The Cydonias were around and called Quince trees, they were usually espaliered to walls and had bigger fruit. I do not recall that it tasted like much!

I’ve always love the color of this plant’s blooms: soft, yet rich. They grow here, though usually in February-ish. Lovely photo, Eliza!
