Honky Tonk

Tulip/Iris flower arrangementAnother mini-arrangement this week features Tulipa batalinii ‘Honky Tonk’, a lovely, butter-yellow species that has increased well in my garden since last year. Tulipa batalinii 'Honky Tonk'Also included are Native Crested Iris (Iris cristata) and three different violets that grow wild around my yard, including the speckled hybrid I adore, Viola sororia ‘Freckles’.

I’m joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden’s In a Vase on Monday meme. Click the link to see what gardeners the world over are arranging this week.

    Honky Tonk indeed 🙂

  2. Anne says:

While the other flowers are very pretty, violets hold a special place in my heart. I have never seen one like your Freckles before.

  3. Chloris says:

I love this tulip and irises are always a winner for me. Such a pretty arrangement Eliza.

  4. FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHS ELIZA, CHINA

  5. susurrus says:

How sweet! Tiny treasures. I’m a fan of ‘Freckles’ too.

  6. All pretty, but the Freckles made me smile.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Judy. It’s a sweet violet that I have to work at keeping from the other types that might cross with it. I love its annual show!

  7. Christina says:

Early spring in a vase, gorgeous.

  8. pbmgarden says:

Beautiful. I love your Viola ‘Freckles’

  9. Those yellow tulips are stunning! They look very lovely with the complementary purple of your iris and violets. The perfect combination.

  10. Alice Pratt says:

What a perfect name: Freckles! That’s a perky little Tulip. Are you familiar with the Stepables violet. One plant has really spread in many area of the yard, mower goes right over them.

  11. Now “Honky Tonk Woman” is going through my head. Had to listen to it on You-Tube. 😉

  12. I love crested iris, the perfect shape for looking down on in the garden. I hadn’t thought to use them in the vase, what a lovely combination you’ve created, Eliza.

  13. sandyjwhite says:

Can’t beat that yellow and purple combination!

  14. Catwoods says:

Just spectacular shots, Eliza! I especially love the violets.

  15. Kris P says:

I really have to try some species tulips in my garden. I love your lemony ‘Honky Tonk’! The yellow-purple combination is perfect. Your native Iris reminds me a lot of our native Iris douglasiana.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Kris. The iris do look similar. I really love that tulip and it is the first one ever to actually increase instead of die in my garden.

  16. Murtagh's Meadow says:

    Love the colour combination

  17. Blue and yellow is a favorite, as are violets – but, who could resist the Honky Tonk? How do the Iris cristata fare in a vase?

  18. Lovely arrangement and color combination!🙂

  19. Noelle says:

A sweet arrangement and what a good colour combination. The Iris is a great little plant and doing very well in your garden too.

  20. Cathy says:

Pretty and delicate blooms, and a lovely table runner beneath the vase too! 😉 I must look out for those irises – love the soft colours. 🙂

  21. Robin says:

Oooooh! Such a beautiful arrangement. I love violets. I’ve never seen the “Freckles” variety before. It’s lovely.

  22. Val Boyko says:

Love yellow and purple … in a hanky tonk way 💕

  23. Kathy Sturr says:

Oh, how pretty! Like little sunshine drops!

  24. Cathy says:

I have several different T batalini rickii and they all do well here – yours look lovely with the contrasting iris and viola…thanks for sharing them

  26. ladyfi says:

    So very beautiful!

  27. tonytomeo says:

Crested iris? They look something like our Pacific Coast iris. I am not familiar with them.

  28. Such beautiful colours 🙂

  29. So pretty, Eliza!

  30. Those colors are just fabulous!!!

  31. AmyRose🌹 says:

OOOO I LOVE those yellow tulips, Eliza! And that Iris! Just gorgeous! I had Irises in my gardens but they started to overtake everything. I dug them out, gave them away, and planted more manageable flowers. I enjoyed them while I had them though. I’ve got to find those yellow tulips for my garden. 😁

  32. Beautiful creation and love the top angle captures, Eliza. The doily background compliments wonderfully! Is the doily an heirloom? I still have and love my grandmother’s dollies, they are a wonderful memory for me. 🙂

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Donna. Yes, I’ve collected lots of old linens, both crocheted and embroidered. Some from relatives, some from yard sales. Few make doilies by hand any more – I love the work of art they are!

      • I have embroidered ones too. They give me wonderful, happy memories watching my grandmother work on them. I even embroidered a few myself with her direction, but I could never get the hang of crocheting.

  33. Jane Lurie says:

What a gorgeous combination, Eliza. I love those Honky Tonks… so delicate.

  34. ecopoet says:
