In A Vase On Monday – Variety

To feature more of my vase collection, I’m offering two vases for today’s IAVOM.

The first, in an orange Blenko vase sporting autumn colors (that are showing around here in the trees faster than I’d like), are Dahlia ‘Tiki Torch’ with gold, salmon and lemon Zinnia ‘Sprite’ blooms. White Phlox (P. paniculata), yellow Calendula officinalis and Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) finish the arrangement.

For the second, I used a vintage, heirloom lead frog, with spiky nails to hold the stems. As you can imagine, it is quite heavy and topple-free.

Filled with velvety Dahlia ‘Voodoo’ blossoms, ‘Lemon Queen’ Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), bright pink Zinnia ‘Sprite’ and light pink Cosmos ‘Sensation’ blooms.

Accents are lavender-blue Heart-leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), Nigella damascena seed pods and a few Ladybells (Adenophora confusa). Greens are Hosta leaves and fronds of Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides).

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling In the Garden, who hosts a weekly meme to showcase arrangements created from our gardens. Wander over to see what gardeners all over the world are arranging this week.

  2. Alice Pratt says:

The Blenko vase is color perfection! I love the Lemon Queen Sunflowers…..

  3. cindy knoke says:

    Such wonderful variety!

  4. maureenc says:

Your zinnia and dahlia puts me in mind of a burst of fireworks!

  5. Gracefully Global says:

These are all from your garden, Eliza? They are just gorgeous!

  6. Widdershins says:

Autumn colours starting to show their heads. 🙂

  7. jenanita01 says:

I simply cannot choose, I love them both!

  8. pbmgarden says:

Eliza, these are both wonderful. The first one with its orange theme is so warm and complete. Love it.

  9. Joanna says:

You seem to have a wonderful collection of vases! Both arrangements are beautiful, but the second is my favorite! Those Voodoo dahlias are really striking! And I love the color of the Lemon Queen sunflowers! I have Giant Primrose this year, which is a similar color.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Joanna. I have over 50, I think, although I’ve never counted them purposely. The hutch is full of them and they are scattered around the house, too. Kinda crazy!
‘Voodoo’ is my favorite for its rich color and by far it is the strongest bloomer I have.

  10. Cathy says:

I especially like the overhead view of the first vase, Eliza, and your vintage second vase is a wonderful item which would do justice to all sorts of arrangements. Thanks for sharing

  11. Peter/Outlaw says:

Both arrangements are fabulous as always but I got very excited about the first one. I love how Blenko glass sparkles and the color of your vase is perfectly matched with it’s contents! In my glass hoard, there are a few flat sheets of Bkenko in that color that are waiting to be incorporated into a panel.

  12. I love these both – I don’t think I can pick a favorite today!

  13. LINDA from EACH LITTLE WORLD says:

Wow! You created the perfect arrangement for your orange vase. I think I would have been afraid to buy a vase in such a strong color. Love that frog. I’ve never seen one with that unusual shape.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Linda. The Blenko was a gift from my sister for my October birthday. It works well for fall arrangements. Frogs can be a challenge to use, but they must have been a godsend before foam was invented!

  14. I am not sure which vase I like better….but the orange one certainly is different and what a bold autumn statement!

  15. AlisonC says:

Those oranges are beautiful shades individually and perfect together in that vase. The second is very pretty and colourful sitting in the low vase. Such rich colours too.

  16. Kris P says:

They’re both pretty but I absolutely adore the first one with all its orange shades. I never think of adding white to an arrangement dominated by orange and gold flowers but it gives it just the extra light it needs. I love that orange vase too.

  17. rickii says:

Kris P (above) just expressed what I had been thinking. Love that lead frog/vase but it’s the first vase that captured my heart.

  18. So lovely. I particularly like the vase and floral pairing in the first arrangement.

  19. Christy B says:

That orange vase is perfect for the chosen flowers – a real stunner 😀

  20. Beautifully arranged.

  21. Cathy says:

Both gorgeous arrangements Eliza. 😀 The orange glass vase is absolutely spot on for those autumn colours, and I love the spiky dahlia at the front! The second vase is so romantic. I have never seen a frog that shape – I have a tiny round one that I bought online as I have never seen one in a shop here either. Leaves are falling here, but autumn colours are only coming slowly. We need a really cold night to get them started I think.

    • Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Cathy. When I see vintage frogs, I snap them up even though I have plenty. One never knows when they may be needed. 😉
We’ve had cold nights aplenty since August. The annuals here do not like it! A couple places in town had light frost about 10 days ago – so unusual.

  22. The flowers are beautiful, but that orange vase is absolutely gorgeous. Together it is a blue ribbon for sure. 🙂

  23. Jewels says:

Beautiful Eliza, I especially like the orange one! 🙂

  24. Robin says:

Oh gosh, they are both such beautiful arrangements. I was thrilled to see your Blenko vase. We used to live in West Virginia, and have a few pieces of their glass from our time there.

  25. Jane Lurie says:

Oh, I love these, Eliza. The oranges in the first are so masterfully arranged. 😍

  26. Gorgeously vibrant Eliza, I love the first in particular.

  27. Brian Skeys says:

I do like the first arrangement, very cheerful.

  28. ladyfi says:

    Lovely autumn colours

  29. Kathy Sturr says:

Ooooh, love that orange!!! Orange you glad that Fall is here? Things are turning fast! I am so thankful my winter paradise was spared by Irma!!!

  30. Beautiful! The first tells me ‘yes, it’s still summer but fall is right around the corner’.

  31. Anca Tîrcă says:

    Slowly slipping into autumn…wonderful arrangements!

  32. MK says:

I’ll take one of each! Thank you!
