I thought I’d change things up this week and share a vase that isn’t pink. 🙃 Primary-colored florals of summer are boldly on display today!
Blue globe thistle (Echinops ritro), red montbretia (Crocosmia aurea ‘Lucifer’), yellow black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) and goldenrod (Solidago sp.) offer the main part of the color scheme. Wild fillers are fleabane (Erigeron annuus), fringed yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia ciliata) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). My prop is a summery note card with sunflower art on the front.

Ah, goldenrod, and globe thistle too. These two are new to me (although I grew globe thistle as a cut flower crop in 1986).
Thanks, Tony. The bees adore both… the goldenrod is wild (the fields are full of it) and there are several species which provide a long bloom period. It is an important food source for bees as they prep for the long winter.
I got my first garden variety goldenrod from Tangly Cottage Gardening only two winters ago. The native species are not much to brag about.
There are reportedly 75-100 species of goldenrod in America alone. Lots to choose from and hybridize.

Thank you, Val. Crocosmia does overwinter, but the voles eat patches of them, but fortunately, they self sow to replace what is lost. It works. 😉

Oh my goodness – goldenrod already! But it certainly goes well with globe thistle doesn’t it? Did you get rain yesterday/today? Line after line of rain and thunderstorms started around noon yesterday and continues right now….sunshine around noon, perhaps…
Thanks, Chris. Yes, goldenrod started blooming the end of July. We are fortunate with the rain of late (5″ last week and an inch today, with more showers later in the week).

Your bold beauties were a great choice this week, Eliza. I miss my Echinops ritro, which died out some years ago. It’s not a plant I see often here but there is one local garden that’s managed to keep it going.

Love the ones you have chosen! My Lucifer was gone but returned this year 5 to 6 foot tall. I watched one year as I planted it, it began disappearing into the ground, as a mole or vole grabbed it by its roots. It must not have tasted very good. 🙂

I giggled at your title, because that’s how it sometimes feels in my garden, too — it’s either various shades of pink/peach/purple or a blaring HI I’M REALLY NOT PINK and it makes it sort of hard to figure out what to do sometimes when both want to be in the vase that week 🤣 Such a happy summery bouquet! I adore black-eyed Susans and am sad I forgot to scatter some this year since my old patch has nearly faded away. They are definitely on the list to revive next summer.
Thank you, Angela, you got it! I felt I had played the pink card one time too often. 😉 I love the Gloriosa Rudbeckias with the mahogany eyes, but most eventually revert to plain ones, like here but they’re still beautiful, but taller than straight R. hirta.
I had never thought of using fleabane as a filler, but it works beautifully. Such a gorgeous arrangement.
