Last week’s heat wave, along with enough showers, made a lot of garden plants happy. It pushed others out of bloom and many more leapt forward to full-on summer.

Yellow and orange red-hot pokers (Kniphofia uvaria) dominate this week’s vase, accompanied by spikes of purple speedwell (Veronica longifolia). Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), evening primrose (Oenothera fruticosa) and a lemony day lily (Hemerocallis ‘Hyperion’) add yellow, and a single red-orange sweet pea (Lathyrus odorata) was added to vie with the orange red-hot poker. Wildflower fillers are daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus), oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

Oh my. I have only one little black eyed susan in bloom so far. But I planted seed in May and then that month was so cold and wet. We’re only now getting stuff about 4 inches high. Sigh. Your flowers are soooo beautiful!
Thank you very much, Dawn! The heat last week really sent things soaring. Hope yours catch up soon. 🙂
So colorful. I always love seeing red hot pokers!
Thank you, Julie. They are an interesting plant, very drought tolerant.
Yellow sweet pea?! I have never seen one. I was not aware that yellow was within their color range. It is nice to see red hot poker being appreciated.
No, the sweet pea is red, not yellow. 🙂 Knifophia aren’t really all that common here, but they grow well in this climate even if they are from S. Africa.
Well, that explains why I could not find them. I only saw the red sweet pea.
Beautifully composed bouquet
Thank you, Dawn! 🌸
I can feel the warmth around them Eliza. Beautiful 🤗❤️🙏
Thank you, Mark!

Such a lovely mixed bag of summer colour! I’ve not seen yellow Pokers before – do they overwinter right in the garden?
Thanks, Chris. They do!
Such a fabulous mix Eliza! I love those colours together. 😁
Thank you, Cathy!
That lemony daylily is the star of the show for me; framed by the fleabane, it’s especially attractive.
Thank you, Linda. It also bear a sweet fragrance, a lovely bonus.
Simply beautiful. (Suzanne)

Thank you, Susan! 🙂
Summah, summah, summah! And, you have black-eyed Susans. Mine aren’t’ even close to blooming.
Yes! 👏🏼 The heat pushed the BES into bloom in the meadow, where it is drier, but the ones in the main garden are just budding. Must be moisture makes them lazy. 😉
Interesting weather. And the west is burning. And we are enjoying old Hawai’i weather. Rains at night, tradewinds during the day. Perfect gardening weather. But no illusions. Things always change. Here’s hoping you all get some sustained relief Soon. 🙏🌺🌹♥️
Thanks, Bela. A cool day is a welcome respite!
A great summer mix!

Showers? Wouldn’t that be lovely? Even on days without the heat, some things are wilting 🙄Such an unapologetically summery vase today – thanks for sharing it Eliza
Thank you, Cathy!
Those Kniphofia uvaria add such drama to your arrangement and sum up hot summers. I hadn’t even realised that they could be used as cut flowers. It is a delightful arrangement, many thanks. Noelle
Thank you, Noelle! So far they are holding up well. I gave them a fresh cut this morning.
Definitely a summer 4th of July vase! Full of color and zing.
