Hi Eliza. How lovely to see a flower! It’s that point in winter when I am beginning to feel a bit desperate for colour. We don’t get back to Le Shack until the end of the month but I keep picturing our spring bulbs all just beginning to poke their heads out of the ground and can’t wait to see them.

  5. Cleopatra indeed. Lovely kind lady 🤗❤️🙏

  9. Alice's avatar Alice says:

Magnificent!!! So many flowers at once. You must be thrilled looking at that. Is this a new…1st time growing this one? The red edging on the petals is super pretty. My ‘Apple Blossom’ from last year has just started growing…maybe 1 1/2″

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thanks, Alice. Yes, new this year, ordered online with my fall bulbs. My regular HD ones, I put in the garden this summer and they did well. I potted them up a few weeks ago, hopefully they’ll bloom in 6-8 weeks.

    She’s a beauty! 😁

  11. dawnkinster's avatar dawnkinster says:

Love these plants. Don’t know why I don’t buy one for myself

  12. Absolutely beautiful. Do you keep your bulbs from year to year?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Judy. I generally do, to mixed results. Last summer, I learned from a blogging buddy to put them in the garden to replenish. They grew fat and healthy. After a rest period, I just potted them up a few weeks ago, so we’ll see how they do. Fingers crossed!

  14. That one has interesting coloring.

wow, I’ve never seen this color…beautiful!

  16. shoreacres's avatar shoreacres says:

It’s a beautiful flower. I smiled to see the snow outside the window in the first photo; that’s reason enough to grow such indoor gems!

  17. Wow! What a gorgeous amaryllis!

  18. Oh my! Those colors are stunning.

  19. krispeterson100's avatar krispeterson100 says:

She’s looking great, Eliza! Mu Hippeastrum are in pots outside and, despite above average temperatures, they’re taking their time getting their bloom on.

It took me a while to figure out that in the wild, Hippeastrum bloom in spring. Perpetuated as a Christmas sales plant from African imports, naturally they bloomed in their spring, our fall. But keeping them in the northern climes, they revert back to spring blooming. Now I treat my old stock as March/April bloomers!

  20. Wow…what a spectacular Amaryllis!

    Wonderful !!

  24. Debbie's avatar Debbie says:

She. Is. Stunning! I had a gorgeous red one many moons ago, but I haven’t tried growing one since. Who knows why? But they’re certainly a spirit-lifter during these cold, gray days.

  25. Lovely to see when the garden is tucked in for the winter. A “queenly” plant!

  26. tomwhelan's avatar tomwhelan says:

A beauty, and a delight to have indoors to accompany the white stuff outside.

  27. Bela Johnson's avatar Bela Johnson says:

I’m not sure about Amaryllis. I’ve seen people grow them in shade houses here in Hawaii, I’ve seen really successful growing of them in the high altitudes of northern New Mexico, indoors or in a shed for the winter. Our Puerto Rican neighbor from our last house here planted hers outdoors in the ground! They did OK, nothing fancy, all red. But beautiful just because she had them! But I never see varieties like what you’ve got here in HI, I did see some of those in New Mexico while we lived there.

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

They can’t take frost, so that makes outdoor growing here impossible. I envy those who can just put them in the ground and let them grow on their own.

      • Bela Johnson's avatar Bela Johnson says:

When I first saw them at the neighbors, it was a bit surreal. I wondered- what are those flowers? When she told me, I was a little perplexed. I mean they grow fine here at high elevations apparently, there is a flower grower at the markets every week who occasionally has them. But we were at near sea level. Oh well, nature’s mysteries!

  28. That’s the prettiest amaryllis I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t mind having one of those!

  29. Jewels's avatar Jewels says:

Simply gorgeous, Eliza! I receive an amaryllis every year from a friend of mine and enjoy it so much. It’s just a basic red one, but it’s a beaut! 🙂

  30. Maria's avatar Maria says:

She is gorgeous!! You really do have green thumbs.

  31. Love this one. Is it a Butterfly Amaryllis?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Amy. Not sure the parentage of this hybrid, but there has been a lot of new forms available in recent years. Holland breeders have been busy!

      • There is a passalong Amaryllis here that is Coral with similar markings. They call it a Butterfly?

      • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

I’ve heard of them. IT says “Hippeastrum papilio, commonly known as the butterfly amaryllis, is a rare and exotic flowering bulb native to the Atlantic rainforests of southern Brazil.” The ones we see for sale in stores and catalogs are mostly from S. Africa originally. I expect breeders are crossing them to get variations.

  32. Robin's avatar Robin says:

How pretty!! I love the markings. ♥
