IAVOM – In the Kitchen

I’m sharing more Littles this week. I always have a few little vases on the windowsill in the kitchen to cheer me as I go about my day. Sometimes intentionally collected, other times they are stems too short to go in a regular arrangement.

The Dahlia ‘Pinelands Princess’ stem had grown all wonky and had to be cut short. With a single bloom to look at, one can really appreciate the perfect form and beauty of this cultivar. A few sweet peas offer a delicious treat for the nose, and the last vase holds yellow woodland sunflowers (Helianthus divaricata), Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) and catmint (Nepeta mussinii).

IAVOM – Gleanings

As opposed to last week’s Littles, I’m sharing one large vase this week, created from the gleanings of a massive deadheading job (three cartloads!) that I did in my big garden. Deadheading is the major chore at this point in the season, at least for me. Some flowers still have a few days beauty left in them so I tossed them into a vase to enjoy. The goldenrod was leaning into the path around the garden, so it got the chop as well. The geotropic effect from leaning, when flipped, made for a nice drape around the base.

Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) forms the base, filled with Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro), Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus divaricata), Chinese Astilbe (A. chinensis var. tacquetti) and Phlox (P. paniculata).

IAVOM – Three Littles

Burgundy ‘Voodoo’ and orange (No ID) dahlias

I’m sharing three little vases this week. Nearly every day as I wander around the garden, I pick a bit of this or that to bring inside to enjoy. Not much makes me happier!
