Winter View

IMG_4573We drove to Bullitt Reservation today and took a snowshoe hike to the spot where there is a nice view across the valley to the hills beyond. I’ve taken photos in summer and fall from this same place and it is a good way to see the seasonal changes that happen in New England. Click on the links to view the differences.

IMG_4568 IMG_4574The shadows are still long, but the sun is now warmer than it has been and the hike warmed us even more.

IMG_4572Not such a long hike, but it still had my heart rate up! The snowy field is like a big sand dune and very similar to walk through. I love the pristine look of freshly fallen snow and a part of me hates to mar such perfection. No worries, this winter it seems there is always more snow and wind in the forecast coming to cover our tracks.IMG_4569

Orchid Show

IMG_4437At this time of year, I eagerly embrace anything that involves growing plants so when I saw a flyer for an orchid show sponsored by the local orchid society, I knew it was just the thing to take my mind off the weather.

IMG_4372 IMG_4374There was a riot of every conceivable type of orchid from the most diminutive species to the largest hybrid cattleya. And the colors – oh my! Every combination from red to near black.

It was lovely to immerse myself in a tropical forest of scent and color away from the reality of our bitter, wintery weather. I’m glad I got a chance to see so many beautiful examples of this celebrated queen of the plant kingdom and look forward to making this an annual escape-from-winter event.

Hunkering Down

IMG_4342A Northern Cardinal and a Blue Jay, awaiting their turn at the feeder, are hunkering down against the cold on a snowy day. Their bright colors stand out against the lichen-encrusted branches, offering a cheerful contrast to the dull gray of winter.

In A Vase on Monday: Forsythia

IMG_4350Cathy at Rambling in the Garden has issued an In a Vase on Monday Weekly Challenge to create a vase from things we’ve gathered from our own garden. I first heard about it from friend and fellow blogger Elizabeth at A Forest Garden.  Cathy writes:

“You would be most welcome to join me and others in posting a vase every Monday or just once in a while. The spirit of the meme is to find material in your own garden or foraged locally to place in a container – but it is after all a personal challenge so there are no strict rules.”

IMG_4349Living in New England, my garden is still sleeping under a couple feet of snow, so pickings are few and far between. However, I clipped a few sprigs of forsythia from the edge of the garden last week and brought them in to force. It always lifts my spirits to see their pendulous golden bells. With our spring still months away, it’s fun to cheat just a little.IMG_4351

Moody Blues

IMG_4264Late afternoon sunlight and tree shadows create moody blues along the river.

*Just to clarify, this is what it really looks like– no blue filter or tint added post processing.

Snow Day Fun

DSC09141What do you do when it snows? Go sledding! My young neighbors (I think of them as my surrogate grandkids) joined us for an expedition to the top of our hill where there is a fine view and the open field is perfect for sledding. DSC09143It’s been snowing on and off for two days now, a fine light snow that so far hasn’t accumulated to more than a few inches, although previous snowfall and drifting has the snow to the depth of my knees. DSC09145Loading the toboggan, getting all the legs in and the weight right…heaviest last. 😉

Easy going down, tougher coming up!

DSC09155

The best part is the laughter, gosh, I have such a good time with my snow angels!

DSC09147Special thanks to my spouse for handling the dog and the camera!
