Black & White Photo Challenge #3

Dec2011 255 - Version 2Day Three – It may be officially Spring, however where I live…

Recap: I have been invited by Ana of Celebrating Sunshine to participate in a Five Day Black and White Photography Challenge. Her blog is full of cheerful, inspirational posts exploring the positive side of life. Please visit her blog to see for yourself. Thank you, Ana for inviting me to this challenge.

There are only two rules for the black and white photography challenge:

  1. On 5 consecutive days, create a post using either a past or recent photo in black and white.

  2. Each day invite another blogging friend to join in the fun.

I’m normally drawn to color photography over black and white, so I accepted the challenge to see if I could improve my appreciation for it.

Today I invite Julie at Ramblings From Jewels to join us in the challenge. Her love of nature is reflected in her beautiful photos, taken around her home in Minnesota. Her poems capture life’s simple pleasures. Please visit her page for a real treat. No pressure, however, this is about having fun!

Time To Take Down Bird Feeders

It’s that time of year again…words to the wise…

3-17-15 black bear-eating sunflower seeds IMG_3607To prevent black bears from visiting backyard bird feeders, Fish & Wildlife Departments in New England recommend taking down birdfeeders from April 1st through December 1st. This year those dates are fairly conservative, as bears were visiting feeders after December 1st, and several have been seen frequenting feeders this month. The idea is to remove anything outdoors that would be of any interest to a bear which has just emerged from hibernation and is desperate for food.

Approximately 85% of a bear’s diet is vegetation. Before green shoots make an appearance in the spring, flower parts of aspen, willow, maple, ash and hazelnut, along with carrion, make up most of a bear’s diet. After losing 23% of its body weight during hibernation, a black bear finds protein-packed sunflower seeds very appealing. Make sure your garbage is secured, barbeques clean and pet food kept indoors, as well as your feeders. Keeping…

Dawn Walk

IMG_4655After a night of rain, the sun rose above fog-shrouded hills and shadowy valleys. IMG_4643Illumined paths of sunlight stream through the forest, IMG_4656and

bejeweled branches, bright with raindrops, adorn my way.IMG_4732Long tree shadows stripe the snow as I take the snowshoed trail to the river.IMG_4708

IMG_4667The first rays touch the trees, dispelling the mist. The day is warmer than it has been for a long while and the river ice is being worn away by the flowing water. IMG_4689Some time ago a creature crossed the river, leaving meandering foot prints, eroded by the weather and now shadowed by the rising sun. Snowflakes glitter beneath bare branches.IMG_4688IMG_4723

Delicate, papery Beech leaves whisper as I pass by.

Heading home, I wonder how much longer it will be before winter loosens its grip and spring finally arrives.IMG_4641

Backlit

IMG_4314At the end of the day, dried Beech leaves are backlit by the setting sun.

American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) leaves persist all winter until they release in the winds of March, just before the new buds of spring unfold. I am thankful for their tenacity, not only as an echoing reminder of the leaves of summer, but also for the gentle, papery rustling they make when the wind blows. Mesmerizing and soothing, they reassure us that life in the forest is only resting.

… To Preserve This Beautiful Planet …

A beautifully written post by a dear friend that expresses what is in my heart as well.

“I begin with nature today, which gives us so much, including the amazing opportunities for photography. Hence it must be our duty to preserve this beautiful  planet, in whatever small way we can in our own capacity.

This is the best gift we can give to our coming generations.”

Suyash Chopra

This morning, while looking at a series of photos Suyash recently published in black and white, I found this beautiful thought.  I resonate with Suyash’s understanding of photography as a sacred act, as a way to “preserve this beautiful planet, in whatever small way we can.”

Gardening allows me a very immediate and hands on opportunity to preserve the tiny bit of our planet’s ecosystem within our garden.  Planting for wildlife habitat, protecting the soil, increasing diversity, and using sustainable, organic practices all help to make this tiny garden lush, beautiful, and life…

Snow Pyramids

Like a mountain range of snowy pyramids, these slabs of river ice, softened by deep snow, create long, blue shadows in the late afternoon light.

Orchid Show Redux

IMG_4442Since there were still some more great images that didn’t make it into my first Orchid Show post, I thought I would offer another view of the marvelously varied world of orchids.
