In A Vase On Monday – Solstice Swag

IMG_9575Every year, I adorn the mailbox post out by the road with a swag made of balsam fir (Abies balsamea), Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), pine cones and winterberries (Ilex verticillata), and top it with a pretty bow in hopes that it helps put passersby in a festive mood.

IMG_9579A friend of my son’s made this beautiful ceramic cup, which I used to make a small arrangement for the desk that sits next to our front door. Made of the same ingredients as above, it has little 2″ spruce cones in the center. When there isn’t much space, little vases can do a lot to brighten up a spot.

In A Vase On Monday – Holiday Basket

IMG_9573The Christmas holiday theme continues this week with a hanging basket of balsam fir (Abies balsamea), Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), holly sprigs (Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Princess’) and winterberries (Ilex verticillata).

I’ve added a snowflake-imprinted ribbon bow and a faux red cardinal to add an extra bit of pop to the evergreens.

In A Vase On Monday – Holiday Upgrades

IMG_9572

I decided to give my harvest wreath and dried flower bucket a Christmas holiday upgrade by adding balsam fir (Abies balsamea), Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) and winterberries (Ilex verticillata)IMG_9577

Here is the before photo:IMG_9372

As you can see, the mermaid is still hanging out on the porch, keeping Buddha company (he is a bit out of the picture to the left). I think he is a good influence, helping her see that her vanity is only a reflection of her ego, not her true soul. 😉

IMG_9571I removed the gold oak leaves from the harvest wreath, then added evergreens, pinecones and a few manmade baubles to add a bit of glitz: sage green, faux eucalyptus sprigs and a couple glittery, round balls. For comparison, here is the original: IMG_8930

In A Vase On Monday – Rose and Privet Wreath

IMG_9362

This week, I was inspired to make a simple wreath from the bright green, first year canes of wild roses (Rosa multiflora), which grow rampantly all over our property, an unwelcome, thorny invasive. The birds love the red 1/4″ hips and spread the seeds far and wide. Once the plant reaches maturity, it forms an impenetrable thicket, making it a favorite hideout of cottontail rabbits and small birds.

IMG_9366Remarkably, the young canes are relatively free of thorns, which apparently develop in the second year. I only encountered one small thorn as I wove this wreath, sitting in the sun on one of the warmer days this week. IMG_9364Measuring about six inches in diameter, I added a few privet berries (Ligustrum vulgare), another invasive (!) and a jute bow.
