The season of seeds and fruits is upon us. Today’s vase shows Cotoneaster berries and ruby-red Penstemon ‘Husker’s Red’ seed heads. Goldenrod (Solidago sp.), pale yellow Zinnia elegans and beach sunflower (Helianthus debilis) complete the arrangement.

Cotoneaster already? I have not noticed if ours are coloring. They are more for autumn and winter. I got my first goldenrod this year, but because it is new, and dried out earlier, it blooming only enough to show me what it is capable of.
Compared to our very hot July, August has been unusually cool here (no complaints), so things are showing color early.
It’s the epitome of late summer, Eliza!
Thank you, Audrey, and it’s been feeling quite autumnal, too. 🙂
Here on Vancouver Island as well–cool and wet. Tomatoes may never ripen, but at least the wildfire situation is improving.
Good news about the wildfire containment, but sad about the tomatoes. However, green tomatoes wrapped in newspaper will eventually turn red. 🙂
So pretty!
Thank you, Belladonna!
❤️
This is an attractive change of season arrangement!
Thank you, Anne!
Lovely arrangement
Merci, Sheree!
Lovely, large, lemony Zinnias! (I have ‘Thumbelinas’). Cotoneaster berries remind me of cranberries.
Thank you, Alice. They do look a bit like cranberries, don’t they? They are actually in the Rose family, rather than the Heath family.
I visited places this weekend where goldenrod usually appears, and didn’t see a bit: another sign of how we lag behind you. I especially like the combination of various shades of yellow here. Are the brown seedheads the cotoneaster? I got confused when you mentioned ruby-red Penstemon seedheads, but only the berries look red to me.
Not the best lighting for photography. 😉 The penstemon are a very deep red/burgundy and are arrayed across the top, while the red berries are cotoneaster on the left and right with round green leaves. Thanks, Linda!
Monitors and such make a difference, too. The penstemon look brown to me, but now if I really squint I can catch a hint of the burgundy!
These are so pretty! 🌺
Thank you!
So pretty! I do love this season of seeds and fruits.
Thank you, Laurie! I bought my first orchard apples today… crisp and tart! 💖
Oh, nice!!!
Yellow flowers seem to be the color today. I like your addition of berries.
Thank you!
Hi Eliza. Now I am definitely feeling autumnal.
MJ
🙂 Thank you, MJ!
Oh, I love this! What a difference the addition of berries make!
Thank you, Dale. I love adding berries, grass and seed heads to arrangements, it feels right! 🙂
It really adds oomph!
🙂
Beautiful yellow flowers and berries too! I’ve very little of the former and none of the latter at the moment.

Thank you, Kris. It’s feeling like autumn these days with blessedly cooler days and nights.
Your bouquets are always soooo pretty. Were you a florist in another life? 🙂
Thank you, Monika. Actually, one of my first jobs in my 20s was as a florist. Many, many moons ago. 😀 I went to school for horticulture, have always had gardens, but only worked in the field early and late in my work life. Garden design was where I was happiest.
Now this clearly shows that Fall is right around the corner, Eliza — lovely arrangement!
Thank you, Debbie. I bought my first apples from a local orchard today, which always says ‘fall’ to me.
What a lovely bouquet !!
Thank you! 🙂
A perfect late summer arrangement, I love it.
Thank you, Noelle!
I like the way the seedheads and berries splay out from the vase, setting off the rest of the contents. I don’t think I have ever seen penstemon seedheads as for some reason my penstemon ae always so relucatnt to flower! Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Cathy.
P. ‘Husker’s Red’ has the prettiest, glossy burgundy seed pods, which will dry to a handsome brown, good to overwinter.
Such a beautiful combination with the berries and seeds Eliza! 💛
Thank you, Xenia!
Beautiful late summer, pre-fall vase!
Thank you, Donna!
So pretty and cheerful.
Thank you, Cindy! x
A summery arrangement, with a hint of autumn! Nicely done, Eliza!
Thank you very much, Tina! 🙂
Another delight set off in that beautiful sapphire vase!
Thank you, Belinda! 💙
Your vase is lovely, Eliza. Its nice to incorporate berries and seeds, especially those bright red gems.
Thank you, Alys. I love putting them in arrangements for variety.
Gorgeous zinnias – lovely big flowers. I have never seen such big cotoneaster berries! They look quite stunning in a ‘late summer’ arrangement. 😃
Thank you, Cathy. The cotoneaster berries are eaten as soon as they ripen, so I was lucky to grab a few before the critters devour them. All my ‘decorative’ berry bushes don’t stay ornamental for long!
Great contrast between small and large flowers!
Gracias, Maria!
Oh, I love this with autumn vibes but sun central. The Golden Rod gently draped outward is perfect!

Thank you, Jenny~
I love this arrangement, and the angle of your photo Eliza 💐
Thank you very much, Val. 🙏🏼 💕
Lovely and cheerful!🙂
Thank you! 🙂
Very pretty! I too used Husker Red seed pods and goldenrod in a bouquet I made for a party at our house on Saturday. The seedpods are a nice pop of accent color, and the goldenrod brightens things up!
Your zinnias are gorgeous, and seem huge! I can’t believe I out and out forgot to plant any zinnias this year!
Thank you, Kimberley. It’s a nice combination, and I like the pods dried, too. I love zinnias and they are a MUST have every spring.
I’ve never heard of beach sunflowers before. How interesting! Love the penstemon seed heads in this arrangement.
Thank you, Allison. These small sunflowers are the perfect size for arrangements, easier to use and less heavy than H. annuus. They tend to flop and flower from the leaf axils, so staking is needed. (But the big heavy ones need staking, too, at least here where summer windstorms will knock them over.)
Very Autumnal! wonderful color combo. Beach sunflowers are native here, I throw them away! are they summer annuals there?
Thanks, Amy. Actually, I saw your brown sunflowers (H. debilis) that you grew last winter and ordered seed because I liked them!
I have billions if you want more!
Ha, it probably is funny to you that I actually paid for weed seeds! 🤣
I bought them at some point
Awesome as always! 🙂
Aw, thanks much! 🙂
