My sunflower pocket vase arrangement this week celebrates the glory of summer with a mix from my cutting beds (in the background, right): Beach Sunflower (Helianthus debilis), Zinnia elegans and Z. angustifolia), Gloriosa daisy (Rudbeckia hirta), Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), Marigold (Calendula officinalis), white and apricot Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Dwarf Hummingbird Mint (Agastache ‘Poquito’), Poppy seed-pods (Papaver somniferum), Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare purpureum) foliage and flowers.

From vase to choice of blooms to the decor, this is top-notch. Absolutely gorg 🌻 🌻 🌻 Eliza!!!!
🙂 Thank you very much, Dawn!
Most welcome deary 🎉💗🎉
Summer in a vase, Eliza! And the vase is perfect too.
Thank you, Audrey! Hope your summer is going well. 🙂
It is. Thanks!
Love these warm summer colors, Eliza!
Thank you, Sandy! 💛
That certainly is a lot of orange. Does bronze fennel not form a swollen base like more typical fennel? It seems to be only an ornamental variety.
Yes, it is purely ornamental. I love the look of it and it is a host plant for the black swallowtail butterfly.
I like fennel too much to grow a less productive ornamental sort. I see it in the neighborhood, so I know that it performs well here. (Renee of Renee’s Garden Seeds is right up the road, and shares much of her seed with neighbors.) It grows taller and more prominently than the common sort. I should not be surprised, since the common sort used to be naturalized within the Santa Clara Valley, and likely still grows wild in riparian situations there.
Apart from the cheerfully bright flowers, I am delighted to see this vase again 🙂
Thank you, Anne. I tend to only use it in summer, don’t I? It seems made for sunny flowers. 😉
These are a delight kind lady, a ray of sunshine in your garden with their blooming yellows, oranges and blacks. Thank you for sharing 🤗❤️🙏
Thank you, Mark. Summer in a vase!
That it is dear lady 🤗❤️🙏
Beautiful flowers, but I’d enjoy it if it was just the vase because that vase is one of a kind. 🙂
Thank you, Judy. It was hand-painted in Ecuador, so even if there are many like it produced, it is somewhat ‘one of a kind!’ 😉
Beautiful! I love that vase and you have filled it with some gorgeous things. The colours are so summery. 😃
Thanks, Cathy. It rather does shout ‘summer!’
A profusion of sunny petals…so lovely!
Thank you, Alice!
So so Beautiful and you have even got a vase to match Thank you for posting 🙂 3 🙂

Oh, that array of orange and yellow is just so…summer! Lovely, Eliza!

Thank you, Monika! Enjoying the height of summer here. 🙂
I love that pocket sunflower vase and what a lovely slection of daisies and other summer treasures you have filled it with today. I especially love the ‘burnt orange’ blooms
Thank you, Cathy. My fondness for orange flowers has grown over the years, probably from all the gorgeous blooms I see on this meme. 😉
Yes! I too have grown to love things through IAVOM 😊
What a perfect vase! The whole arrangement is a stunner. Love seeing the poppy heads starting to appear.
Thanks, Jenny! I felt pleased with this one. 🙂
Oh, how pretty! The colors all compliment each other — it almost reminds me of Fall, with all those yellows and oranges.

Thank you very much, Val! 💖
What a great combination of flowers for that magnificent vase. Tip top arrangement.
Thank you, Noelle!
So pretty. I was interested to see Rudbeckia hirta called Gloriosa daisy. I know our native R. hirta as black-eyed Susan; is yours a cultivar, or simply called by a different common name?
Thank you, Linda. Sources say Gloriosas are native to the western US and seed was dispersed in the 1830s. I’ve read that a botanist at Smith College in the 1920s selected the mahogany strains we see today. It differs from the field BES I see around here in the wild, which are much smaller, though both wild and cultivated sport the same hairy stems and leaves.
Interesting. Do you have a scientific name? The only reference I can find for the word itself is to a quite different plant called flame lilies.
Both are referred to as Rudbeckia hirta, but Gloriosa daisies are differentiated from the common BES, I believe due to seed selection. I will get plain yellow BES every year, but I only choose the seeds of the mahogany-splashed ones to sow in the fall. They are self-sowing annuals, so I’ll thin the seedlings in the spring to half a 6-10 plants. Always a surprise to see what I get.
Never mind. I found them at American Meadows.
One more note. They seem to be something I’ve never heard of before: a tetrapoid cultivar!
Yes! That’s it! An extra chromosome makes them larger. 🙂
Eliza, your vase is amazing along with the flowers you’ve collected for the occasion. Delightful.
Thank you, Alys! 🙂
I adore that vase, Eliza, and you’ve accented it perfectly with the flowers you selected to fill it (or vice versa). I’m still trying to catch up after returning from the Garden Fling in Puget Sound so there’s no vase from me this week. I think I may have picked up a bug somewhere along the way too but I’m hoping for a quick recovery…

Thank you, Kris. I hope you have a speedy return to health as well. Can’t wait to read about the Fling. I expect you saw Lori from DG?
A lot of the bloggers & Instagrammers from California and other parts of the west coast (plus the Texas contingent) were there, Eliza. I saw Loree, Gail (Piece of Eden), Denise (A Growing Obsession) and Gerhard (Succulents and More) and many others, including some I’ve communicated with online for years but had never met in person. There were 100 attendees, including a few from Canada and one from the UK!
Wow, that’s terrific!
Absolutely stunning and your flower arrangements are a highlight of the summer season!!🙂
Thank you, S! Glad you liked it. 🙂
The vase is perfect for a bunch of sunny flowers! Gorgeous arrangement, Eliza.
Thank you, Barbara! 💛
A beautiful summery bouquet and perfect vessel for it!
Thank you, Denise! It’s a unique vase, for sure.
Love it! So summery. How do you like those sunflowers in the garden, an online search said something about them being more of a creeper and maybe I need to try them next year!
Thanks, Frank. I like the smaller size that doesn’t take a lot of space, but I do stake them as they flopped after the first heavy rain. (Most things have to be corralled in my garden, a task I don’t love, but the foliage eventually covers most of the supports. The flowers are just perfect sized for vases, and long-lasting, too. Recommended. I’ll be saving seed for next spring. I’ll send you some.
