Thank you, Dale. These are true Geraniums, as opposed to Pelargoniums (from Africa), the ubiquitous summer annual. They are popular because they are tough as nails! 😉

Ah, those common names! This doesn’t look a thing like our wild geranium (Geranium carolinianum), although it’s utterly lovely. Yours is much taller, and purple, while ours tends to be ground-clingy and pink. I’ve read that ours also can produce purple flowers, but I’ve never seen one: only the pink, or an occasional almost-white.
It is a very broad genus, with so many different species. My garden alone sports many cultivars… 7 off the top of my head, not including the wild one.

Lovely image. It looks like the Geranium maculatum, not a cultivar or nativar. Mine are blooming now as well.
Yes, they bloom along our river, native and perfect as they are, no improvement needed! 🙂
I find them in the woods and on the edges of woods. Always a welcome sight!
