Hi Eliza. Fascinating that something so twisted and somehow misshapen turns into something so beautiful.

I never would have guessed ‘peony.’ Is all that twistiness leaves or bracts?

  17. tomwhelan's avatar tomwhelan says:

Neat shapes, I’ve never seen them in this phase. I thought of an ugly duckling as well.

  18. derrycats's avatar derrycats says:

My peony bush has come and gone for the season, but it lasted nearly a week this time before the rain did it in. Maybe I prize it even more than other things in the garden because its beauty is so short-lived each year, but spectacular while here.

It’s brevity of bloom does force us to appreciate it all the more while it is in season. The secondary buds thankfully extend the bloom time!

  19. susurrus's avatar susurrus says:

Their leaves always remind me of hands at this stage.

  20. Debbie's avatar Debbie says:

I’ve seen peonies in bloom here, and they’re gorgeous. This doesn’t look anything like what I’ve been seeing. Wonder why??

  21. Very strange and different from how it will look!

  22. Jet Eliot's avatar Jet Eliot says:

Nature always keeps us guessing — great surprise to me, Eliza.

  23. That is a perfect photo of newly unfolding peony foliage! ❤

  24. Interesting twists and turns. I would have never guessed a peony!
