…. Sailors take warning.
Tuesday morning sunrise forewarning the latest storm to overtake the Northeast, right on the heels of a storm that delivered 9″ of snow on Sunday. This one is starting out as snow, then sleet, followed by heavy rain as the temperature rises through the night. Flooding expected, again. What a winter!

Beauty of a shot! And we have the same thing here. It started snowing around 3-ish this afternoon. Went all the way and now, it is mixed with freezing rain, which is supposed to change to rain. Gonna be uuuuugly tomorrow!
Must take advantage of the pretty now!
Thank you, Dale. Sounds like you got the same. Awful slushy out there now… I’m hoping the walks will melt and dry before it freezes again, ice is a scary thing for us old folks! š
Now? It’s a mess! The rain started mixing in with the snow at about 10ish last night. Full on rain this morning so my walkway that I thought would be smart to NOT shovel (we were expecting freezing rain and I thought it would make an easier base to remove) was a packed, heavy heart attack snow. Ugh. There are “lakes” everywhere because the sewers can’t handle it. The sun is supposed to come out this afternoon, but between you and I, I doubt it will do much good!
Oy, not a good scene… I hope they get those drains unclogged!
It’ll take a while, methinks. At lunchtime there were still quite a few.

Weather wisdom, for sure! I’d trust your sky ahead of some of our meteorologists! Flooding’s no fun, but that snow surely is pretty. We’re finally in line for a hard freeze next week — it’s plant moving and wrapping time.
Thank you, Linda. Weather surprises… it keeps us on our toes!
Are you affected by flooding, Eliza? The sky looks so pretty … a reminder that when adverse conditions hit, look for the positives. š
Thank you, Joanne, yes it could always be worse. š We came through okay, the river is up, but not flooding, thankfully. Lots of slush that I hope melts before it freezes again.
It’s good to hear all is well. xx
Eerie š± we are NOW in the throes of the rain. Itās coming DOWN hard š§ļø Wishing you all the best Eliza. Stay warm and dry.
Crazy rain, eh? We got mixed, so lots of slush this morning, ugh.
Yuck. Hope you managing ok. All rain here
Yes, good so far at 46Āŗ with walks and roads clearing, yes!
Ok. Thatās good!!
Itās a lovely photo, Eliza! Stormy weather here too!
Thank you, Belinda! It was a big storm! Now for more cleanup. š
Weāve had a mixed bag of precipitation but not nearly the amount of snow forecast, phew!
Looks prettyā¦.no sailors here, a few hours easterly of youā¦wind is noisy, snow meltingā¦hopefully power will stay on, but for many it won’t. Certainly bizarre weather to have tropical rains, here, in January.
IKR? Strange weather indeed. Fingers crossed the slush melts before the temp drops again!
Beautiful photo! Hate that youāre getting hammered by bad weather again.
Thank you, Ellen. I’m hoping most of it melts before freezing weather sets in again. Yo-yo weather!
Wonderful sunset, but a good warning too. Hope you’re spared the heaviest of snow and have stored plenty in your pantry just in case.
I’ve been watching YouTubes of the snow and storms in the U.S. Something like 46 out of 49 states with storm warnings I heard yesterday (I think it was 46).
But 3 areas in my state and some other areas of the Australian east coast are flooded also. Apparently Melbourne had a few flash floods too. We’ve certainly had a lot of rain so far this Spring/Summer.
Thank you, Vicki. Extreme weather seems to be the new normal, alas.
It sounds very messy. We got nearly a foot of wet snow in eastern IA today. No warming trend coming. Instead, a lot colder and some more snow.
Ugh, slush then ice, NOT good!
Sounds crazy. We got some very wet snow here. About 7 inches. There could be more on Thursday, then below zero temps.
Indeed. It is the ice that I fear most!
You and me both.
I appreciate your reports of snow a lot more now that I have children living in Norway. They are apparently experiencing the worst snow for some years – new for them – and I am fascinated (though glad not to be there) by the long icicles hanging from their roof, the height of the snow everywhere … you are all a brave lot. All I have to be concerned about is whether I will be able to swim before the predicted thunderstorm arrives!
Thank you, Anne. I have a buddy in Sweden and she reports that this winter is like what they had as kids, so I guess it is the old normal, not the ‘new normal’ of the past few years.
We certainly have never had this much rain in winter. We read recently that rainfall in New England is up 90% since the 70s. Wow. Wish I could send some your way or out to California where it is needed!
Who needs the aurora borealis when you have sunrises like that! I hope the storm doesn’t bring too much trouble.
Thank you, Kris. We seemed to have come through okay…lots of slush that I’m hoping will melt before it freezes again. Ice is a tough beast.
A very beautiful morning. Stay safe!
Thank you, Maria. Very slushy out there right now! Fingers crossed the warm day clears the pathways. š¤š¼
Wow. The sky looks really amazing!
It went from dull gray to red in a quick minute, then just as fast faded, truly amazing. Missed the brightest red when I ran for my camera!
Beautiful
Merci, Sheree!
lovely capture Eliza!
Thank you, Dymoon!
Great photo, but I hope the flooding doesn’t get bad. We had a storm yesterday, and the waves and wind of almost 60 mph were something else.
Thank you, Judy. Same storm as it made its way north. Fortunately the winds weren’t bad here with manageable water run-off. LOTS of slush though… let’s hope it melts completely today or it will be an icy mess.
A great way to start your day with a beautiful sunrise. We got dirty hail two nights ago. The storm picked up dust in the west and hail formed around it. There were a lot of dirty cars the next morning. It will be 75 tomorrow and a hard freeze next week.
Thank you, the weather is an up-and-down thing everywhere it seems!
What a winter is right! With this storm, the wind wasn’t as bad and we didn’t lose our power. But what a slushy mess! We will have to clean in stages.
Yes, same hereā as Gilda Radner used to chirp, “It’s always something!” š
Sure is!
Makes me think about how in nature many things that are red are toxic but also beautiful So yes, enjoy looking but beware. Not scared but aware
Great comment! Thanks, Karen. šš¼
It’s such a beautiful photo Eliza, despite the weather-warning! Hope you all stay safe and dry šš§”
Thank you, Xenia, we made it through okay!
What a striking shot. I hope that you don’t have more floods …
Thank you, Carol. The water rose about a foot, so flooding wasn’t bad, but the road washouts continue. It is rather worrisome!
Although it could have been worse, I am very sorry – I hope the weather alleviates soon.
Thank you, you and me both!
Looks like a beautiful sunrise, Eliza. What a winter indeed! I hope the storm didn’t bring too much damage with it. It’s too bad about it washing away the snow.
Not too bad, but unfortunately, the roads just can’t take the beating. Washouts are becoming all too common (and expensive for a small town to fix). As my spouse warns, “Get used to it!” š¦
You are a storyteller š¹
All true! š š
You can say that again, Eliza! A pretty pink sky in the early morning invariably brings something wicked in the weather department later. We had awful winds overnight, but thankfully, it’s dry. I think we’re in for it this weekend though.
Winter fun! ;D
Ugh! A slushy mess is never a good thing. Take care, Eliza.
I forgot the most important part. Beautifully captured sky. š
Thank you, Pepper! š
Stay safe & warm!
Thanks, we came through it pretty well! š
Hi Eliza. Wow. But same story everywhere.
MJ
Which is rather alarming!
The strange thing is we had that too…
That storm stretched from the Gulf to Canada…quite incredible! It is becoming an all too frequent an occurrence.
I was on WP last night with a lady in NJ, same weather!! So weird.
A woman from Australia (no less) commented that she read that most of the US population was having extreme weather!
Wonderful to see some color, weāre having very gray days!š Hope youāre staying safe in all the weather conditions!š
It rose to 46Āŗ today with bits of sun between showers, not too bad!
Your capture is beautiful! I didn’t read all your comments but hoping you weathered this last storm well. We had 40-50 mph winds, tore off some fascia on our house. There’s flooding everywhere around the Chesapeake Bay. We’re saturated but my marsh in the back stayed where it needed to, whew YAY!
Glad to hear you weathered the storm (despite the house damage). We came through okay, but our roads got washed out here and there. I am getting tired of this endless rain that seems to only fall in large amounts all at once!
We have a lot of local flooding, some roads are still under water at high tide here. Our yard is still squishy. And now more rain and wind tomorrow, ugh!
I feel the same way, ugh!
Stay safe…and warm.
Thanks, all is well!
Delighted to hear that. Keep on keeping on.

‘Red in the morning, shepherds warning
Red at night, shepherds delight.’
Hope it isn’t/wasn’t a portent of things to come.
Our culvert washed out again, but other than that all is well. š

Thanks, Val!
Beautiful morning sky! We just had 6 or 7 inches here, now washed away by rain, with more rain coming tomorrow.
Thank you, Tom. We got 9″ ā dry and easy to move, thankfully. A lot has melted in the ensuing warm days. Tomorrow is the last (50Āŗ!) warm day for a while I guess. Next week looks pretty cold!
A lovely scene, but I hope the weather isn’t too unkind to you. It’s turning colder here this week and there is the possibility of some snow.
Thank you, Andrea. We’re heading into a deep freeze this week as well, typical of mid-January. This, too, shall pass!
Yes, what a winter! In Britain our saying is ‘Red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning. Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight.’ It’ll come from a time when weather could be more accurately predicted by conditions in nature. This seems to be less so now with modern living. Ahh for a simpler time. Nice picture by the way.
Thanks, Jill. With satellite weather at our fingertips, things have changed. With that info lots of lives have been saved over the ensuing decades, so that is a good thing!
Haha, I saw the same sky here in Pa and the same thought ran through my head. Snow does make for a more interesting winter but now that it’s also forecast to get cold? I might have to finally dig out the winter coat.
Yeah, back to our regularly scheduled programming. There has to be at least a week of deep freeze in January, right? Thursday looks to be the coldest with a low of 7Āŗ… still about 10Āŗ above our traditional average. Mixed feelings about that!
yeah, we would also have to drop another ten at least to get close to a winter low. If we don’t do it this winter I’m planning a zone 7 garden this summer
Pretty winter sky. Glad everyone is getting some needed snow!
Thanks, Denise. I am grateful that there is some insulating snow cover protection during this frigid cold spell. It helps the plants and critters.
Red sky at night, sailors delightā¦makes me think of my grandfather who would teach us things like this while we rode on his boat.
Beautiful sky and trees. Nine inches of snow, woah!
Yes, things we learned as kids. š 9″ is a common amount of snow for us. We used to get bigger storms 12-15″ and the rarer 18-24″, but with CC, we don’t see those amounts anymore. In the 90s, by mid-winter, the snow depth was at least 30″, in the past few years more like 8″… Most days get above freezing now, so there isn’t the accumulation between storms. Truthfully, I don’t miss those winters!
I grew up in NJ and we seemed to get huge amounts of snow way back when. Of course when youāre a kid it always seems magical. I miss the beauty of it but not having to get to work in it!
Yes, we easy about all that since retirement, except the shoveling, but not as much to do with lighter snowfalls.
