IAVOM – Sunny

Time to showcase my sunflower pocket vase with a mini-sunflower (Helianthus annuus) grown from seeds saved from a previous summer. Those plants were short and while these plants are also short, the crosses have been interesting!

Additionally, there is goldenrod (Solidago sp.), black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), calendula (C. officinalis) and woodland sunflower (Helianthus divaricata).

Splendid! Sunflowers are not nearly as popular here as they were years ago. I can not imagine why. It seems that many of those that are popular here bloom for autumn or late summer, about now, rather than the middle of summer.

  15. That is such a cute vase and you have the perfect flowers for it. While I was on vacation in PA, I saw a tiny house with sunflowers planted all across the front including the across the front door.

    Some bright and cheerful

  18. Angela's avatar Angela says:

What a cheerful arrangement! I was just trying to figure out a way to use some goldenrod. The fountain effect works so well with the sunflower as an anchor.

That self-seeded sunflower is wonderful with what looks like a fancy frame around its center. Every time I cut sunflowers I think of your wonderful sunflower vase 🙂

  20. Cathy's avatar Cathy says:

Beautiful! I really love your vase, and the flowers you chose for it are perfect! You have arranged everything so nicely. 😃 The woodland sunflower is something I have never seen here, but I assume the well-known Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ I grow was derived from that originally.

  21. jmankowsky's avatar jmankowsky says:

The flowers and the vase are such a striking combo!

  22. As always a great arrangement and usually the vase complements the flowers but in this case I think they are on equal footing.

  23. Jet Eliot's avatar Jet Eliot says:

I really enjoyed this oh-so-vibrant summer arrangement, Eliza.

  24. Alice's avatar Alice says:

What an adorable, little, perfect sunflower. I think sunflowers change daily and take the longest of any flower to set seed.

Thanks, Alice… nice to see that WP let you comment! Another reader said they had the same trouble. I think WP has been having a few hiccups lately, by the sounds of it.

  25. Rebecca's avatar Rebecca says:

Sunflowers, my favorite! Beautiful combination, Eliza!

  26. Vicki's avatar Vicki says:

This post may be about flowers, but that vase is definitely a winner and the pattern nothing like I’ve ever seen before.

Is it modern or maybe early 20th century?

    Such a cutie 💐🥰

  28. greendreamsswe's avatar Maria says:

So gorgeous! Yesterday I walked by my old workplace and admired all the sunflowers I wanted with the students in the spring. Sunflower is my favourite flower. Your bouquet is beautiful.

  29. Eliza, your vase is stunning! It’s hard to tell where art becomes flower and flower reflects art. I bet you had fun pulling this together.

  30. bittster's avatar bittster says:

Love it! The cute round sunflower makes the vase, although I’d never turn down a calendula!

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Frank! I bought and sowed hybrid calendula about 5 years ago and it is fun to see what crosses come up every year from those originals. Some are quite beautiful.

  31. Gorgeous arrangement and love that vase!!🙂

  32. Very beautiful, Eliza! Do these shorter varieties have a long growing season too?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thank you, Belinda! Not really… they bloom and fade like any other sunflower. I think they were bred for the florist industry. They grow about 3′ tall with a single bloom. You’ve probably seen them in shops.

  33. jillslawit's avatar jillslawit says:

Ooh I love these, so yellow and happy.

  34. A perfect bunch of flowers for the pretty vase! You’re an artist, Eliza.
