IAVOM – Big and Little

At least once a summer, I get the itch to create a really large arrangement in one of my hefty vases. This blown glass beauty I brought back (very carefully as a carry-on) from a trip to Poland. The whole … Continue reading

IAVOM – Fruits and Seeds

The season of seeds and fruits is upon us. Today’s vase shows Cotoneaster berries and ruby-red Penstemon ‘Husker’s Red’ seed heads. Goldenrod (Solidago sp.), pale yellow Zinnia elegans and beach sunflower (Helianthus debilis) complete the arrangement. Thanks to Cathy at … Continue reading

In A Vase on Monday – Late Summer Gold

In late summer, our fields are full of several types of Goldenrod (Solidago sp.), laid out like a huge buffet for pollinators. Goldenrod pollen is high in protein, just what bees need to prepare for the cold season ahead. An … Continue reading

In A Vase On Monday – High Summer

For this week’s vase, I’ve picked flowers from my garden that to me, simply shout “high summer!” Pink garden phlox (P. paniculata), pinwheels of black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’), goldenrod (Solidago sp.), little jewels of striped mallow (Malva sylvestris), white flowering … Continue reading

In A Vase On Monday – Orange & Yellow

This week, I’ve combined yellow and orange with a touch of purple and white, using bi-colored hybrid daylilies (Hemerocallis x), white flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata), yellow woodland sunflowers (Helianthus divaricatus), goldenrod (Solidago sp.) and purple hosta (Hosta x) for accent color. The … Continue reading

Last Hurrah

Oakleaf Hydrangea (H. quercifolia) puts on a show in reddish-orange and burgundy beyond a screen of dried wildflowers – goldenrod, aster and heliopsis – gone to seed at the edge of the field.
