IAVOM – Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day in the USA, a day to remember the men and women who died in service to our country. I hope in the midst of the bustling activities with family and friends one takes a moment to pause and give thanks in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I chose a red, white and blue theme, as well as flowers with significant meanings such as forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) and white bleeding hearts (Lamprocapnos spectabilis alba) to convey heartfelt feelings connected to the holiday. Also included are creeping speedwell (Veronica peduncularis), Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium caeruleum), Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica), lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis) and red azalea (Rhododendron hybrid).

A second vase offers the last of the lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) (they go over much too quickly), and a last double white Narcissus (N. poeticus recurvus flore pleno), white Rhododendron catawbiense album, white and yellow bearded Iris (no ID), double-file viburnum (V. plicatum f. tomentosum) and a half-seeded sprig of (Corydalis ophiocarpa), a rather persistent, but pretty, weed in my garden.

IAVOM – Scentsational

Lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) have burst into bloom this week and collecting a vaseful is one of my biggest spring delights. Burying my nose into those scented blossoms is delicious aromatherapy!

Adding a tiara of white bleeding hearts (Lamprocapnos spectabile alba) only adds to their charm. A few trimmings of ninebark foliage (Physocarpus opulifolius) provides support.

But that is not the only vase in the house delighting the olfactory senses… a handful of lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) has me smiling every time I pass by them. A few violets (Viola sororia) and a slip of ninebark jumped in as well.

IAVOM – Inspiration

Sometimes inspiration for an arrangement comes from just one small corner of my garden, as is the case today.

Narcissus ‘Pipit’, Jacob’s Ladder, Bleeding Heart and Korean Spicebush

Narcissus ‘Pipit’, Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum), Bleeding Heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) and Korean Spicebush (Viburnum carlesii) are lovely companions in the garden as well as arranged in my vintage blue milk jug. A few flowers from a nearby sedge add accent.

IAVOM – More Daffs

I get to use my Lenox daffodil vase this week! Narcissi ‘Thalia’, ‘Starlight Sensation’ and ‘Pipit’ share the limelight.

New Walkway for Spring

We’re very grateful and proud of the work our son did refurbishing our front and back flat-stone walkways. Previously, they looked like shifting tectonic plates, now restored for easy stepping. Good hardscaping complements a garden!
