Harvest Wreath
I didn’t feel like attempting my usual vase today, so instead, I thought I’d make a harvest wreath from things in my yard and land, along with a few bought items. I’m pleased with how it came out and it looks nice against the rustic barn boards of the woodshed.
I started by going to the river and collecting young, wild grapevines to weave into a base, which you can hardly see, as it is mostly covered.
I used fresh sage from the garden and drops from the wild Baldwin apple tree west of the house. There was a nice crop this year and they are sweet and flavorful. I will collect the good ones and store them in the garage to feed the birds come January. Robins, cedar waxwings and bluebirds love them.
Dried magnolia leaves left over from my birthday bouquet have delightful, cinnamon-colored, felted backs that begged to be repurposed.
Glycerine-treated oak leaves add a touch of gold and I included a few rusty ones I picked up in the yard as well.
A few milkweed pods from a swamp milkweed that self-sowed into a crack next to the garage were salvaged before the winter snows crushed them.
The final touch was a burlap bow.
Happy Autumn to you!

Looking Good November 6

Foliage is the primary focus in the garden these days, with my current favorites being the above bridal wreath (Spirea x vanhouttei) and in the photo below, oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia). Both display multiple layers of color, adding light and depth.
Beyond foliage as the main attraction, seeds bring a lot of interest to the autumn garden. The slender pods of milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) have opened and their silky parachutes are slowly teased out and borne away by the wind. I struggle to express with simple words my love of the delicate beauty of this plant. Perhaps this is where a picture truly is worth a thousand words!
In the field, maiden grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’) has fully fluffed out and it waves gracefully in the slightest breeze. As it sinks over the hill, the late afternoon sun turns it to gold.

Looking pagoda-like, hosta (H. sieboldiana) seed heads have split open, revealing satiny, blue-black, winged samaras. When examined up close, they are quite beautiful.
Another sweet seed head is the brown fuzzy-bear of common groundsel (Ligularia dentata). A gift from a gardening friend last year, I cut it back early while this year I didn’t, so I was delighted when I saw its fat, 1″ brown tufts. I guess being a lazy gardener has its perks!

In A Vase On Monday – After the Frost
I missed creating a vase from my garden last Monday, but I’ve recovered from my despondency over the demise of much of my garden, so today I roused myself to see what I could come up with this week. I was pleasantly surprised that there was still an ample supply with which to create my arrangement.
Dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) and Johnny-jump-ups (Viola tricolor) are still green and blooming. I was pleased to discover a late bloom of seventh son tree (Heptacodium miconioides), with its usually pure white, fragrant blooms tinged pink from the frost.
A few seed heads from a hosta (Hosta sp.) that had escaped my deadheading caught my eye. The pendulous racemes had split open, revealing layers of black, papery seeds within.
I was next drawn to the burgundy and yellow foliage of my bridalwreath (Spiraea × vanhouttei). I love the way the interior of the bush is golden yellow, graduating out to green then maroon at the tips. The twigs are a deep chocolate brown, providing a beautiful contrast. It looks as if it is lit from within.
The burgundy foliage of Korean spicebush (Viburnum carlesii) begged to be included, as well as a few burnished purple leaflets of barrenwort (Epimedium lutea).
Lastly, gray-green garden sage (Salvia officinalis), which is tough, frost-hardy and nearly evergreen, completed the selection.
The green apothecary bottle was a yard sale find and the vintage, hand-painted, carved ducks once belonged to my in-laws. I used my pansy doily to repeat the violas in the arrangement.
Many thanks to Cathy at Rambling In the Garden, who hosts a weekly meme to showcase what is blooming in our gardens by creating arrangements to enjoy inside our homes.

October Light
“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.”
