The most abundant time of year in my garden is here and today’s mix is proof of that. It is hard to limit myself when picking and I end up with a vase full every time I go out to select ‘just a few.’
Pink: coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata). Yellow: Calendula officinalis crosses, Zinnia elegans ‘Envy’ and bronze fennel flowers (Foeniculum vulgare). Accents: purple Verbena bonariensis and gray-green poppy seed heads (Papaver somniferum).
A small second vase holds Zinnia marylandica ‘Zahara Salmon’ and Dahlia ‘Hypnotica Icarus’ and ‘Grandahlia Dark Red.’

My bronze fennel is blooming also, although not as nicely as yours. It had it rough, and then got attacked by aphid. It is nice to know that it is perennial, so should be back for another performance next year. Watching yours has been interesting.
Now, I should try cleome.
Both self-sow, so you’ll have them forever. 🙂
It’s like an annual smokebush, all fuzzy purple, now topped with gold.
Annual? Isn’t yours perennial?
It can be biennial, but it self-sows, so it is hard to tell apart from the dead stumps I see. Our winters seem to be too cold for plants to overwinter. What I was alluding to is that smoke bush is a shrub, whereas fennel is an herb. 🙂

Our self seeders are all what we call Granny bonnets, I think their real name is aquilegia. I really should plant something else, just to get some variety…

So many flowers! I am getting lots of ideas for flowers to plant.
Thank you! The annual self-sowers save me lots of money in the spring. Once they sprout, I just move them around or thin them in place (poppies don’t transplant). Everything in this bouquet, except the zinnia, are gifts of nature. 🙂
I came back from vacation to find my coneflowers in bloom and my… dang, I cannot remember the name but they are very tall and yellow… oh wait! Google Lens says they are Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia lacinata). They are taller than I am.
Anyway, all this to say your beautiful bouquet pops! Beautiful! I love the second one as well. You do have a knack.

The flowers and poppy capsule in the first vase are lovely, but it’s hard to beat the vivid red zinnia and dahlias.

You keep astounding me with the selection of flowers you keep combining for these arrangements, Eliza. I don’t actually know what state you live in, but you must have much more rain than we do in the West, especially during a megadrought. Right now, we are having trouble keeping the drought-tolerant plants alive!
Thanks, Tanja. I live in MA and while we are technically in a ‘moderate’ drought (Jan. and June were driest months on record), we’ve been getting showers now and again to keep things going. I have soaker hoses for my veggies and annuals for really dry spells, but I’ve only had to use them a handful of times. Average annual precip. is 45″, though we haven’t had that for a couple years. Your climate is much different!

We can only dream of 45 inches of annual rainfall, we used to get between 15 and 17. So far this year, we have only had about 6 inches (it should be 9 by now). Luckily, we are receiving some monsoon moisture this week, but not enough to catch up.
