Whoever said it first (Ford? Thoreau? Lincoln?) was right; “Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice.”

Good thinking! Enough firewood is something to be grateful for on a cold day.

  9. Planning and a lot of work! Did you chop the wood yourselves? I hope you’ll have enough for your colder than normal winter.

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Yes, my spouse did it all that, a cherry broke in a storm and he couldn’t just leave it. A massive amount of sweat and toil went into that stack, god bless him!
We burn 4 cord/yr. and will probably go through the whole lot in the shed, but this is ready in standby should we need it. Otherwise, ready for next year.

  10. That is a lot of work, but so satisfying at the same time. 💗🌺

  11. Woods is quite needed this year if you want to stay warm. What a winter it has been. (Suzanne)

  12. Dale's avatar Dale says:

My wood pile is way low. I didn’t get extra this year and I am regretting it! I have to make sure I’m on the wood-guy’s list for this fall!

All that to say, beautiful shot.

  13. Looks like a beautiful sunny day!

  14. Nice! That should keep you warm and toasty 😊

  15. Alice's avatar Alice says:

  17. Cathy's avatar Cathy says:

That should keep you going a while! 😃Did you cut and stack it all yourselves?

Once upon a time I lived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and stacks of wood ready for the stove were everywhere. Here there are still some, but not nearly as many. And I don’t have a wood stove or even a fireplace anymore. Can’t say I miss hauling wood. But I understand the sense of peace you get when you have it waiting at the ready.

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thanks, Dawn. Many folks here burn wood where it is a plentiful resource.
“The saying “wood warms you twice” is attributed to Henry David Thoreau, who wrote in Walden (1854): “–they warmed me twice—once while I was splitting them, and again when they were on the fire.”
There is security in knowing that whatever happens, we’ll be warm. 🙂

  19. Looks like you’re ready for some warm, roaring fires. Happy Wordless Wednesday!
