Oh, look! Three sibilant sisters!
A fun surprise to come upon, I also find them sunning along the hardscaping, too. It is their sudden movement that catches me by surprise, I usually yelp and then start laughing. Like little kids who jump out and shout, ‘Boo!’ 😀
Three of them! I’m assuming you didn’t freak out.
They always surprise me, but when they didn’t scatter, I took the opportunity to get a shot before going on with my day. 🙂
A beautiful, though startling, find!
Yes, it was a surprise and amusing to see all three, possibly a mother and two offspring. They are gentle snakes and do good work in a garden. Thanks, Anne!
Oh boy! What a surprise in the woodpile. Great shot Eliza. 💐 Don’t know if I would have the presence of mind to hang around there!
Thanks, Val. I ran back inside for my phone and they didn’t move a muscle. I took a pic and left them to their sunbathing. Good garden buddies. 🙂
Such a beautiful neighbour!
Aren’t they? They often startle me by sudden movement, but I love having them doing the good work they do. 🙂
Fantastic! I wonder what else is in there???
Thanks, Allison! I imagine there is a whole world within that shed. 🙂
Peaceful neighbors
Indeed, glad to have them.
They LOVE the wood piles! We have a whole collection of snake skins as the pile diminishes.
🙂 No bugs in there, thanks to them.
Or mice either!
And they eat slugs, yes! 👏🏼
SssSoaking up the SssSunlight! ☀️
Precisely! I thought they were so cute. 🙂
Just warming their souls up before winter comes along. Great post kind lady, as is the photographer daring to dance with them 😂❤️🙏
I tried not to disturb them and was successful. 😉
😳 Bet you weren’t exactly expecting those garden helping visitors!
They are good at the element of surprise, lol!
That will give you a start! I know they are harmless but they still give my heart a jump when I see them! One time while geocaching, we found a couple of them coiled under the box of the cache, and another, when I still had a big vegetable garden, I got one between the tines of my garden rake accidentally and sent it flying through the air I was so startled! It hissed at me on its way down, and I can’t say I blame it!
Haha, I would have loved to see that! They startle me when they suddenly move, but I’m okay with their presence as pest control. 🙂
They have such a pretty pattern. Have seen several this year.
Thanks, Alice. They love our stone wall, walkways and wood shed. Happy campers!
I’ve been seeing a few of them recently here and there, but never 3! Three in one image is super.
Thanks, Tom. I definitely had to attempt a capture of the three. Fortunately, they were very cooperative and I left them to it.
Three! Great capture.
A happy sunbathing trio! Thanks, Alys.
I’m surprised to see 3 at once. At least they don’t have rattles!

I was surprised, too. A mom and babies, I think. Yes, I think my reaction would be different if they were venomous!
Snakes! Great capture of these lovely critters!
Thank you, Tina. They are great pest controllers!
Yikes, just in time for Halloween!! Nice capture, Eliza — better you than me, ha!
Thank you, Debbie. I know how you feel about snakes, but truthfully, garter snakes are really good citizens!
Did you yell three times as loud?! Great shot after such a surprise!😁
Fortunately, they didn’t move at all. I prefer them stationary! 😀
Sssspectacular. 😀
🙂 Thank you!
Hope they didn’t give you too much of a shock! They were probably sleepy from the warmth of the sun though. I’m sure we have snakes, but I have only seen one since we moved here.
Thanks, Cathy. It is their sudden movement that surprises me. These languid beauties were too comfortable to move from their warm spot. 🙂 It is nice to have gentle predators in the garden. 😉
WOW! What do you think they are dining on?
😀 Anything they can find! Their diet includes insects, snails, rodents, amphibians and even nestlings, but these ones are way too small for most of that.
Wow! They look so happy in the sun. I’m assuming they are harmless. 😮
Yes, harmless and very helpful to a gardener. Venomous snakes have been largely extirpated in our area, with only rare sightings of endangered timber rattlesnakes in remote rocky hilltops.
That’s good to know. 😀
Lovely! I miss seeing garter snakes. I used to watch the Vancouver Island species all the time when I was living on the island. There’s only one snake species in Britain that tends to visit gardens – the grass snake, which likes ponds and frogs. It can get relatively big and startles gardeners sometimes! But it is completely harmless.
Thanks, Adele. Harmless is my preference! I like the good work garters do. 🙂
