Silent Sunday – Winter Trees
This entry was posted in Field Notes, My Photos and tagged monochrome photography, Silent Sunday, winter trees. Bookmark the permalink.

I always think of trees like these as the bones of winter. We have a 45 degree temperature drop coming tomorrow, along with strong winds; our trees (other than the live oaks and such) soon will look just like these.
Same here, I like the contrast and seeing the bones of trees. So your inevitable freeze arrives? (Steve will get his frost weed shots!)
In sharp contrast to yours, our trees are covered with different hues of green 🙂
I love the contrast of our seasons, more to appreciate as they swing back and forth. 🙂
Unlike us, trees get naked in winter. 🙂
Yes, we do the opposite, don’t we? Stay warm, Audrey!
It is so different to be sitting here in a very distinct heat…and see snow…almost begging for it. Until I need a jacket 🤣 Thank you for sharing my dream kind lady…one day it will come true 🤗❤️🙏
Contrast is good! 😉
That it is kind lady, a very profound teacher indeed 🤗❤️🙏
Hi Eliza . Very atmospheric. Although I am now at the point where I am longing for them to be green again! I like winter, for a couple of weeks, and that’s quite enough!!
MJ
Thank you, MJ. Yes, our winters are very long in comparison to yours! Good thing I like the season more than I used to, so long as it isn’t super cold. This week our lows are due to be about -15C. Brrr, now that is too cold!
Great photo! It’s fascinating to see the very many structural shapes trees can take. I love it when they burst in to green growth of course, but there is wonderful benefit in seeing how they bear their clothes!
Thank you, Allison! I really appreciate the different ways trees grow, each unique. Lovely bones!
Beautiful, bare branches, but bearing buds. Being patient!
Thank you, Alice. Very much the promise of spring. 🙂
This is the season, with all the leaves off the trees. that I can see all the houses down the street. A very different view than in the spring through fall. But I look forward to seeing it all get green again in time!
There is a huge contrast between the ‘green wall’ of the warm season and now. When the canopy fills in the spring, it always seems surprising to me.
When the green returns, I always breath a big sigh of relief. I love watching the world green up.
Same here, a cause for celebration!
Happy New Year!
Thank you, Ilze!
It is lovely to see the tree structures against the wintery sky.
Thank you, Carol. The bare bones look is a lovely thing.
Winter trees sure can become dangerous in these higher winds we’re having.
Oh, for sure, but a great source of kindling! 🙂
So beautiful! Is it a black and white photo or was that how it looked that day? Almost every twig is visible!
Thank you, Barbara. I did convert it to B/W, but it really made very little difference, it was already pretty monochromatic.
Silence seems best but a beautiful photo of the bare trees.
Thank you! ☺️
Stark, yet beautiful!

Thanks, Kris. Yes, totally unadorned. 🙂
Stunning shot, Eliza.
Thank you, Alys! 💙
I love images like this. Makes the trees look like lace in the sky.
Thank you, Dale. Love those winter bones!
Me too! 😀
The tree on the left of the frame has a beautiful shape, a perfect winter subject.
Thank you, Tom. It’s a sycamore, a favorite native.
Beautiful black and white image, Eliza!
Thank you, Tina!
We’re getting snow right now. I can’t help feeling sorry for the poor trees, having to stand outdoors in the bitter cold … with no clothes on!
Ha, yes, thankfully, trees are well adapted to our winters. 🙂 Hope your weather isn’t too bad… with no ice!
When I see a tree without leaves, I find it hard to imagine it with a full canopy. The opposite is also true. What a wonderful cycle!
Yes, I appreciate both!
I do too.
It almost looks spooky! Is it cold? It’s 2F here right now, but it is going to be slightly warmer and a snowstorm in all of Sweden the next three days. We are prepared!
Ah, the dim light of winter! We’re entering a cold spell this week with night temps in the low teens and temps in the day around freezing, but it is the wind that is making it feel much colder. Lots of wood set on the porch in preparation!
Hard to believe that trees in that state can ever rouse themselves to produce buds and blossom…but they will of course 🙂 It was snowing here last night but has been extremely rainy since.
All our snow melted and now we’re in a deep freeze. Ah, the vagaries of winter!
Beautiful winter scene. Happy New Year!

Thank you, Beth, hope ’25 is good to you!
Looks like that shadow in the tree to the left is checking them out too. 🙂
Ahh, that is a sumac fruit… it does look like a bystander! 🙂
😀
I enjoy bare trees in silhouette. Lovely photo, Eliza!
Thank you, Belinda!
When winter came, it was here quick!
Yes, it did! Did you get that storm? Snow, ice or rain?
Getting a snow storm now! Looks like about 8″ snow so far and still coming down heavy, we might get 10-12″. It looks beautiful, and I am glad I don’t need to go anywhere!
Oh, wow, enjoy your winter wonderland! ❄️❄️❄️
I used to find an image like this – especially when witnessing this in person – to be bleak, sad. As I’ve grown to be an old man, I find it be somewhat beautiful, pointing to something deeper about life, even a bit comforting.
Thank you, Gary. I know what you mean. I used to dislike winter, but I’ve grown to appreciate this quiet season and discovered that it is still very much full of life. 🙏🏼
Mary Oliver wrote a beautiful poem about our angels in the trees, or something like that. Your photo reminds me of that.
You’ve put me in good company, thank you! 🙂
You belong there!
🙏🏼💕
Best wishes for 2025…(Suzanne)
Thank you, Suzanne, same to you!
A silhouette time of year.
Yes, trees are lovely things. 🙂
I love the effect of monochrome bare trees. And very Sylvia Plath-like.
Yes, thanks Jill!
Love, love, love winter trees, and in B&W too! I enjoy seeing the structure and they often make great silhouettes, as in this beautiful example.
Thank you, Denise. One can really see the beautiful structure of trees in winter.
