Wordless Wednesday – Wild Apples
This entry was posted in Field Notes, My Photos and tagged autumn, wild apples, Wordless Wednesday. Bookmark the permalink.

A lovely picture! Are these apples edible?
Thanks, Anne. Yes, they are. Though as they are not sprayed, you might have to watch for worms. 😉 Wild apples are unique (apples don’t come true from seed) and often have a delicious flavour.
Thank you for this information, Eliza 🙂
So pretty!
Thank you, Laurie. 💕
Tree ornaments & deer food!
lovely!
Thank you, Catherine. I love old and venerable apple trees.
me too!!!
😍♥️🍎 beauty!
Thank you, Susan!
I’ve not thought of the word ‘windfall’ in its original sense in a long time, but now you have me remembering apple gathering in the country after a big wind. You’re right about the flavor!
Thank you, Linda. We had an old orchard behind our house growing up, great for snacking on the go. 😉
Beautiful image and so autumnal.
Thank you, Monika!
Fruits/berries in autumn, so lovely and nourishing for those who partake!
So pretty! I hope they’re tasty too.

They are! 🙂 Thanks, Kris.
Lovely photo, Eliza! They do look tasty 🍎
Thank you, Belinda! 🙂
I only know cultivated apples. I’d love to find some wild ones – and taste them!
There has been a greater interest in heirloom varieties of late which had more distinct flavors and shelf life. It is the traveling and storage qualities that have dominated the market these past 75 years, narrowing our choices to about 5, down from the hundreds of yesteryear. There is a farm in VT that is seasonally offering some of these old varieties… so good!
UMass Amherst is active in bringing more of these old apples back into production, after realizing that a disease could wipe out a key food source.
I only know few of the heirloom varieties I remember picking a russet apple at an orchard once. The fruit and veg place I visit has a lot of new hybrids ((15-20 in season) but not so many of the heirloom varieties.
So pretty! Are they hanging low enough for the deer?
Just barely, robins will likely feast on them in January, they like them fermented, ha!
I love wild apples! Had me a nibble the other day (yes, watching for worms). Your photo is just so pretty!
Thank you, Dale. A frost-sweetened Baldwin is beyond yummy! 😋
Beautiful colour! My crab apple is practically deplete of fruit this year, so I am missing views like this 😦
Thank you, Allison. After a bumper crop of crabapples last year, this season is a bit light as well. Resting up for next year!
Yum 🍎 🍎🍎
A pleasant refreshment on a hike. 🙂
