Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (Hylotelephium spectabile) is deepening to a beautiful burgundy and I paired it with gray-green sage leaves (Salvia officinalis) and burgundy coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides). Light pink Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’ and burgundy’Voodoo’, pink and yellow Zinnia elegans, white yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and deep pink cosmos (C. bipinnatus) complete the arrangement. The hand-painted grape pitcher was a thrift store find.

Beautiful 🌸🌸☘️
Thank you, Karen! 💕
You’ve created another nice arrangement, Eliza. Your thrift store pitcher is charming. I would have snapped that up as well.
Thank you, Alys. Sometimes things just call out to one! 🙂
Wow, that sage is impressive. Salvia are very popular here, likely because so many are right at home in the chaparral climates. However, culinary sage is so rare that I can not remember the last time I noticed it in a landscape. These flowers are splendid, and the sage foliage makes them look like they are ready to fly south for winter.
Thank you, Tony. My sage plants are decades old, and were here when we moved in 34 years ago. Tough plants!
Goodness!, so the self replicate. I mean that they produce basal sideshoots to replace the old growth. For some of our Salvia, I press stems into damp soil over winter so that they can layer. As the layers grow, they can replace the original as it deteriorates. Not many of our Salvia would last long if we did not help them to replace themselves. We got Salvia chiapensis only two years ago, and it seems ready to replace itself with suckers up to three feet or so from the original. I am pleased for the suckers, but they are not where the originals were planted. I can always move them.
The colour combinations here are lovely.
Thank you very much, Anne!
Gorgeous colours
Merci, Sheree!
Nature wanting to catch our eye with still plenty of color Eliza. Thank you kind lady 🤗❤️🙏
Thank you, Mark. A few more weeks I think.
Hi Eliza. I love the colour of the trees in the background as well. And I have a vase just like that!
MJ
Really? how cool. 🙂
I love the harvest look to that vase.
Thanks much!
so good to see more flowers hanging on, Eliza… mine have gone to bed already!
Thank you, J&A. I expect we have 2-3 more weeks before frost puts an end to the show. Our weather has been perfect so far. 🙂
Those beautiful deep reds.
Thank you, I love those shades as well.
Beautiful. Your local florist could use your skills.
Thank you, Judy. Been there, done that, ha. Can’t stand on my feet all day like that anymore. 😉
The grapes with the Autumn arrangement is perfect. The yellow Zinnias are another perfect! The pollinators must be waiting to feast.
Thank you, Alice. I often have bees visiting while I am cutting and arranging them out on the deck. 🐝
Yesterday, there were an astounding number of honey bees in the garden, it was buzzing! I guess they are hustling to get ready for winter. 🙂
This is one of my favorites of yours. The Sedum sparks the entire arrangement and the backdrop is lovely.
Thank you, Susie! They deepen to such a rich burgundy, so beautiful.
Zinnias are SO steady & constant. You remind me I must grow them next year!
They really are a great cut flower. I’ve left some heads to seed for the finches. They can mildew in a wet year, but the newer hybrids are pretty resistant.
Such rich colors! I love how the sedums deepen to a burgundy.
Thanks, Laurie. Sedums really earn their deep this time of year, and I leave their dried heads through the winter for interest. Always pretty in the first snows.
I especially enjoyed the first photo, where the consonance between bouquet and background is especially pleasant. It seems it’s almost time to start envying you northerners, with your autumn colors!
Thank you, Linda. It has been a good foliage season so far, let’s hope it continues. 🙂
The sedum has such a rich color. Are the leaves turning up your way?
Yes, they are about peak, with the red maples beyond that, having dropped a lot over the weekend. The oaks are just beginning to turn. The different species provide a long season of color. 🍁
Love the deep reds!
Thanks, Ellen. Burgundy is a favorite color of mine. 🙂
Stunning 🤩
🙂 Thank you, Susan!
Lovely. The colours of fall… (Suzanne)
Merci, Suzanne!
Beautiful jewel-like colours.
Thank you very much, Andrea. 💜
Gorgeous Autumn colours Eliza, such a lovely combination! 💜 xxx
Thank you kindly, Xenia! x
Just gorgeous! Love the addition of sage!
Thank you, Dale! 💚
🧡🍂🌿
Beautiful hand-painted vase filled with perfect flowers of gorgeous autumn hues. I especially loved how you used the gray green foliage of sage. Perfection!
Thank you, Donna! 🍁
The sedum is such a common plant and yet we shouldn’t underestimate the impact it can have at this time of year. It works so well with those gorgeous zinnias and the two dahlias as well – a lovely early autumn vase
Thank you, Cathy!
Stunning.
Thank you, Cindy! 🍁
That is such a happy jug of autumn flowers Eliza. The yellow zinnia stands out so well against all the rich pinks. And the foliage in the background is lovely too! 😃🍁
Thank you, Cathy! The foliage is looking so lovely lately, wish it’d last longer though!
YES!! These are gorgeous! I have sedum, too, only mine are more of a pale lavender. Not especially Fall-like, but the butterflies are enjoying them!
Thank you, Debbie. Sedum really shine this time of year. 🙂
I keep looking for that Coleus, but it must be on the other side of the vase. The Zinnias are amazingly perfect.
Thank you, Noelle. The burgundy coleus is tucked into the bottom near the lip of the vase and can be seen in the first and third photo, but only a couple leaves. 🙂
That’s a perfect vase for a lovely bouquet. The colorful fall color of the trees makes a wonderful background too. Regrettably, there’s no sign of fall color or cool temperatures here yet. I hope you’re enjoying the seasonal transition, Eliza!

Thank you, Kris. The fall foliage is peaking this week and it seems to be a good year. Rain and wind can end the show early, but the weather has been complying. The weekend was gorgeous!
Gosh, that Sedum is just gorgeous!
Thank you, Monika!
Oh wow, beautiful, beautiful! Your colors, including the tree foliage and Sedum, are much farther along than mine are. And that combination in the pitcher vase is lovely. Very nice!

Thank you, Beth!
Great grape pitcher – ladies painting china in New England a few decades back? I love finds like that. I like the sage color contrast with the deeper colors..the sage looks huge? Flowers look great.
Thank you, Amy. Actually, the pitcher seems to be newish, surprisingly with a label ‘Thailand’ –Not what I’d expect!
That sage is at least 35 years old (here when we moved in) and it is quite gnarled. I cut it back hard in the spring and it seems to love it, I harvest right up until frost.
How nice to still see so many beautiful flowers! It’s a lovely arrangement, Eliza 😊
Thank you very much, Belinda!
Beautiful flowers!
Thank you, Diana!
Bold and beautiful! I love the grey Sage leaves in there -they set of the bright colours so well. I can totally relate to the flower selection but my Zinnias all got nipped by Jack I’m afraid! Love ‘Autumn Joy’ at this time of year.

Thank you, Robin!
So pretty, you have the best vases/pitcher/holders.
Thank you, Tracy!
Pretty pretty!
Thank you! 🙂
Always beaytiful! My Sedum “Autumn Joy” never gets that deep purple color…
Thank you, Hien. Cool nights deepen mine to a rich burgundy… lovely!
Beautiful deep autumn colours! Nice to know what your garden grows Eliza 🌸🌼🌿
Thank you, Agnes!
Beautiful pairing, Eliza! And I love the name of this rich Burgundy blossom!
Thank you very much!
