Silent Sunday – Me and My Shadow
This entry was posted in Field Notes, My Photos and tagged Limenitis arthemis, nature photography, red-spotted purple butterfly, Silent Sunday. Bookmark the permalink.

The Red-spotted Purple is my favorite North American butterfly.
Thank you, Roger. I wasn’t sure of its ID, so glad it is confirmed. I learned it is a variation of a white admiral, always learning!
This is a very beautiful butterfly!
Thank you, Anne. A lovely, though brief, visit.
Sweet.
Thanks, Cindy. A fine visitor indeed.
Beautiful butterfly and equally beautiful photo!!!
Thank you, Cathy! 🙂
Precious!! ❤
🙂 Agreed, a thing of great beauty gracing us with its presence. Thanks, Susana
what a beauty!
Thanks, Ilze. Butterflies can be so beautiful!
Beautiful! And an impressive shadow.
Thank you, Barbara. 🙂
Basking Butterfly.
Soaking up the early morning sun!
Even the smallest creature can cast a shadow — love the shadows of the antennae!
Thanks, Linda. I didn’t notice until I looked at it on my phone and saw the antennae. Made the shot so much better. 🙂
So pretty, especially those dots of blue.
Thank you, Laurie. The colors of most butterflies are so amazing… almost unreal!
Beautiful shot (and subject)!!
Thank you! 🙂
What an exquisite capture!
Thank you, Monika. I was lucky it was a bit early and chilly, so it was less flighty when I closed in for a shot.
A fresh red spotted purple, how cool, and a lovely image.
Thank you, Tom, and for the ID. I wasn’t quite sure what it was, looking like a swallowtail without tails!
The species is Limenitis arthemis, Red-spotted purple or Red-spotted Admiral. White Admiral is the same butterfly, and there is a spectrum of morphs from the white form to the red one. White Admiral is more common up north. Same genus as Viceroy.
Thank you, Tom. I googled it after you named it and was surprised at the regularity of its morphs. I’m not as versed in insects as I am flora. 🙂
Great shot!
Thank you, Maria!
What a pretty butterfly — its wings look like velvet!!
Thank you, Debbie. I felt honored by its visit. 🙂
Well named! And what I great sighting on your part!

Thank you, Kris. A very early morning visitor that landed to warm up in the sun. 🙂
Lovely capture, Eliza!
Thank you, Tina!
What a beautiful butterfly Eliza! 💜🦋 xxx
Thank you, Xenia. It was a nice early morning visitor to have. 🙂
Stunning!
🙂 Thank you, Kim!
Oh, WOW!
It was a very special visitor, indeed. 🙂
Lovely photo and butterfly! One that’s new to me.
Thank you, Belinda. Two commenters ID’d it as a variation of a white admiral: a red spotted purple butterfly. This is considered a ‘stable hybrid.’ Always learning! 😉
Me too 😊
Lovely!
Thank you, Alys!
A very lovely capture!
Thank you, Rebecca!
A lovely photo.
I do like those blue spots on the butterfly. It’s almost like an addition to the rather mundane brown of the rest of the insect.
Thank you, Vicki. Although we live far from the tropics, some of our butterflies look very tropical!
What kind of butterfly is this? We don’t have these in the UK that I’ve seen. I love butterflies.
Thank you, Jill. It is a morph of a White Admiral, called a red-spotted purple, a very pretty thing!
Nice shadowplay. You’ve reminded me of a poem for children by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Thank you, Steve. 🙂

Like the Jungian title. Aren’t butterflies the very best?!
Yes, they really are a delight to see in the garden. 🙂
