Wordless Wednesday – Anybody Home?

I wonder who it could be ? 🙂
I wondered the same. Porcupine, raccoon or squirrel perhaps?
Do you know what might live there, Eliza? If I saw that tree here, I would expect it to make a perfect nesting place for kookaburras. ❤
Mostly likely a mammal like squirrel, porcupine or raccoon. Maybe an owl, but most birds prefer a smaller opening to deter predation.
Hark! Whooooo lives there? 🙂
If I lived closer, I’d be able to tell you for sure. 😉
Timely post. I was at Brookgreen for a gardening seminar yesterday, and we walked in an area where there were these huge cavities in the old oaks. They are always an interesting thing to observe.
Nest cavities support many animals and birds. By its size, I’d say mammals most likely.
Peek-a-boo! No idea who…..vacant?
Unknown, but could be home to a number of different critters– squirrel, raccoon, porcupine?
Peek-a-boo! I wonder who? Vacant?
There will be! 😉
Primo, eh?
Prime real estate for somebody!
Yes, south-facing! 😉
and OH! that blue sky!
Yes, it was so remarkably ‘bluebird!’ Cold and clear. 🙂
so, so “bluebird”! Now I have a new name: bluebird sky!! 🙂
Snowboarder lingo! 😉
Rad! 😉
😀
Knock, knock! We have a tree by our house with a similar hole, and red squirrels often nest in it. Fun to watch the babies emerge.
Baby reds are adorable and so feisty!
I’d put money on someone being in there. It’s just too inviting!
A nice warm home for someone!
Love it!
Thanks!
Gorgeous blue sky and love the tree. A tad too high to peek, eh? 🙂 Wonderful.
Thank you, Dale. I marveled at that perfect cerulean sky, what a beautiful day, a rarity lately. I should ask the neighbors if they have noticed any tenants. 🙂
It was stunning. And I know what you mean about a rarity! I was all happy, thinking I’d go for a brisk (it is in the low 20s) walk but then the sun went away. I was no longer tempted.
It must surely have had if does not still!
I suspect somebody is holed up and hibernating, away from the cold (and predators!) What a pretty day you had for this outing!
The sky that day was a rare one, so cerulean!
Quel beau ciel bleu; ils se font rares à Montréal cette année. Un bel arbre bien droit… (Suzanne)
C’était définitivement un ciel bleu rare, même ici. C’est un très vieil érable de la ferme près de chez nous.
What a beautiful photo! I wonder who lives there?
Thank you, I wondered the same! 🙂
There is a tree like that near me, but I never saw any animal or bird in or near it!
A raccoon would find it ideal, I would think. 🙂
Looks like a good-sized residence!
Very roomy! 😉
A rather large opening so rodent is a good candidate (or owl). Is that some sort of maple tree?
Yes, an old sugar maple up the road. There is a field across from it, so an owl would find lots to eat, but I wonder it it would be too exposed a nest. We mostly have barred owls that prefer the woods, but if we had horned owls, maybe!
lol! I ask that question all the time when I see a home or potential home in one of the dead trees around here. I never seem to find the time to just sit and watch long enough to see who lives there.
It’d be worth looking after a snowfall to see if there are tracks. It is a few minutes walk up our road.
Good idea! Let us know if you figure it out. 🙂
👍🏼
Ah, a mystery!
We need a trail cam! 🙂
My curious mind always wants to know who lives in tree holes and ground burrows around me! 🤪
We can’t help but wonder! Yesterday, I spied lots of mouse tracks in the snow with one tracking to a ‘fairy house’ under the roots of a tree. So sweet… right out of Brambly Hedge. 😉
Awwwww…..how sweet to watch!
I hope there’s an owl in there!!🙂
That would be great… lots of mice and voles in the surrounding fields.
A screech owl, maybe?
That would be wonderful…
I hope you will get a look at the resident one day!
I should ask my neighbor if they ever see anything. With 4 kids (!) I doubt they have the time… but maybe the kids might. 😉
That might be a great natural science project for them! 🙂
The kids would be into it, I’m sure. They love the outdoors, sadly, not a common thing these days.
It does trigger ones imagination!
Yes! 🙂
Were you tempted to get a ladder and peek inside?
Not likely, I’m too old for ladders, esp. on uneven ground!
Perhaps you’ll see who calls this place home next time you walk by 😊
Perhaps! 🙂
Which type of wood pecker would it be?
I doubt it would work for a woodpecker, as it is rather large. Most woodpeckers here excavate their own cavities with neat round openings, just big enough for them to enter.
Wouldn’t it be fun to capture the resident as it pokes its head out to have a look around? 😁
That would be so perfect!
Great caption for this. You will have to keep your eye out and let us know if you see anybody!
Thanks, looks like prime real estate to me. 😉
Did you knock?
Surrounded by poison ivy vines, I did not! 😀
🤣
Trees rule. People drool.
Ha, indeed! 🙂
