IAVOM – Gleanings

As opposed to last week’s Littles, I’m sharing one large vase this week, created from the gleanings of a massive deadheading job (three cartloads!) that I did in my big garden. Deadheading is the major chore at this point in the season, at least for me. Some flowers still have a few days beauty left in them so I tossed them into a vase to enjoy. The goldenrod was leaning into the path around the garden, so it got the chop as well. The geotropic effect from leaning, when flipped, made for a nice drape around the base.

Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) forms the base, filled with Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro), Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus divaricata), Chinese Astilbe (A. chinensis var. tacquetti) and Phlox (P. paniculata).

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting the weekly garden meme In A Vase on Monday. Click the link to see what other gardeners have created this week.

Beautiful! Golden Rod grows so happily in Michigan. 😊

  2. sandyjwhite's avatar sandyjwhite says:

    Pretty, as always!!

  3. They say if you build it they will come well I have so many flowers and now bees I cannot get into the garden to collect any for the house so I will just enjoy the beauty for 5 feet away 🙂 and use the zoom feature.

  4. Now, this is quite a lovely way to start the day. Beautiful.

  5. Pepper's avatar Pepper says:

Gleaning sounds like work but with the possibility of beautiful results (as in this vase). 😊👍

  6. Dale's avatar Dale says:

The plus side of deadheading! Not only does your garden benefit, but you also can bring it indoors for a few extra days! Lovely, Eliza.

  7. I really like the wild look of this arrangement.

  8. Alice's avatar Alice says:

When I saw this pretty arrangement, I thought: ‘tamed wildness’…Laurie’s similar thoughts.

  9. Lovely arrangement, I love how the ethereal purple seems to be floating above the sunny yellow.

  10. Your bouquets always bring a smile at the amazing garden you clearly tend lovingly. I think my garden has flora envy. 😉

  11. Cathy's avatar Cathy says:

Abundant gleanings indeed, and the contrasting colours make a dramatic impact. My recent gleanings are far less colourful, being mostly ivy…

  12. Debbie's avatar Debbie says:

Gorgeous arrangement, Eliza — and what a lovely thing to do with deadheading!

  13. Anna's avatar Anna says:

That’s a glorious display Eliza and your gleanings go so well together! Is a cartload what we call a wheelbarrow? If so three cartloads was a good day’s work 😀

  14. Widdershins's avatar Widdershins says:

Heh, there’s nothing like leftovers. 😀

  15. If you hadn’t mentioned deadheading no one would have been the wiser that this bouquet wasn’t intentionally picked and arranged for its own purpose. It’s beautiful. We’ve been deadheading our milkweed as we already have plenty but of course those seed cases don’t really make for a good display unless they pop open on the plant and allow the seeds to spread their wings. Everything else is left alone until the flowers are spent but our garden is not as densely lush as yours. 🙂

  16. It’s dazzling. Eliza 😊

  17. Rebecca's avatar Rebecca says:

I love the deep yellow of the Goldenrod against the late summer purples. Beautiful arrangement!

  18. Cathy's avatar Cathy says:

Aah, lovely! Looks like summer is drawing to a close in your part of the world. Goldenrod is so striking in a vase. 😃

  19. Lush! and delicious. I know you have been enjoying the bounty. The astilbe threw me, I was wondering what in the world it was and came up with agastache! not. oh well.

Always a great way to make a vase. Beautiful meadowy vase that gladdens my heart.

What abundance, Eliza! How big is your “big garden”? I love the lavender, blue and yellow mix.

  22. pbmgarden's avatar pbmgarden says:

Beautiful way to salvage the deadheaded material. I do not enjoy deadheading–always get to it way too late! Globe Thistle and phlox work well together.

  23. jmankowsky's avatar jmankowsky says:

Such a wonderful arrangement! The yellows and purples together are like bringing that “meadow feeling” into a vase, I think. There’s something so satisfying about deadheading…..
    Cheers,

Purple and gold — a sight to behold!

  25. tonytomeo's avatar tonytomeo says:

Ah, phlox. I did not recognize it. I met it only a few years ago, when it appeared within one of our landscapes. It has done well, and self sown a bit, without becoming invasive.
