As opposed to last week’s Littles, I’m sharing one large vase this week, created from the gleanings of a massive deadheading job (three cartloads!) that I did in my big garden. Deadheading is the major chore at this point in the season, at least for me. Some flowers still have a few days beauty left in them so I tossed them into a vase to enjoy. The goldenrod was leaning into the path around the garden, so it got the chop as well. The geotropic effect from leaning, when flipped, made for a nice drape around the base.
Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) forms the base, filled with Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro), Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus divaricata), Chinese Astilbe (A. chinensis var. tacquetti) and Phlox (P. paniculata).
Thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting the weekly garden meme In A Vase on Monday. Click the link to see what other gardeners have created this week.

Beautiful! Golden Rod grows so happily in Michigan. 😊
Thank you, John. It’s a good-end-of-season, high-protein pollen flower for the bees.
Yummy! 😂
Pretty, as always!!
Thank you very much, Sandy!
Welcome, Eliza.
They say if you build it they will come well I have so many flowers and now bees I cannot get into the garden to collect any for the house so I will just enjoy the beauty for 5 feet away 🙂 and use the zoom feature.
It works! Are you allergic to stings? I find the bees are quite willing to share. It’s hornets and some wasps that aren’t so accommodating. 😉
I am allergic to yellow jackets.
Now, this is quite a lovely way to start the day. Beautiful.
Thank you, Judy!
Gleaning sounds like work but with the possibility of beautiful results (as in this vase). 😊👍
Thanks, Pepper. Yes, a bit more effort, but I have trouble throwing useful things out. 😉
The plus side of deadheading! Not only does your garden benefit, but you also can bring it indoors for a few extra days! Lovely, Eliza.
Thank you, Dale. Nothing wasted and a slower goodbye. 😉
Exactomundo!
🙂
I really like the wild look of this arrangement.
Thank you, Laurie, my favorite style. 🙂
When I saw this pretty arrangement, I thought: ‘tamed wildness’…Laurie’s similar thoughts.
Thanks, Alice. If I had to lay claim to a certain style, ‘tamed wildness’ would be it! 😀
Lovely arrangement, I love how the ethereal purple seems to be floating above the sunny yellow.
Thank you, Barbara!
Your bouquets always bring a smile at the amazing garden you clearly tend lovingly. I think my garden has flora envy. 😉
Ha, flora envy, I like that! Thanks much, Monika. 🙂
Abundant gleanings indeed, and the contrasting colours make a dramatic impact. My recent gleanings are far less colourful, being mostly ivy…
Thank you, Cathy. As I mentioned, 3 cartloads went to the compost pile! 😉
Gorgeous arrangement, Eliza — and what a lovely thing to do with deadheading!
Thank you, Debbie. Waste not, want not! 😉
That’s a glorious display Eliza and your gleanings go so well together! Is a cartload what we call a wheelbarrow? If so three cartloads was a good day’s work 😀
Thanks, Anna. Yes, about the same volume, I’d say. I was definitely ‘done in’ after a couple hours!
Heh, there’s nothing like leftovers. 😀
You got it! 🙂
If you hadn’t mentioned deadheading no one would have been the wiser that this bouquet wasn’t intentionally picked and arranged for its own purpose. It’s beautiful. We’ve been deadheading our milkweed as we already have plenty but of course those seed cases don’t really make for a good display unless they pop open on the plant and allow the seeds to spread their wings. Everything else is left alone until the flowers are spent but our garden is not as densely lush as yours. 🙂
Thank you, Steve, I am blessed with great abundance here, that’s for sure!
It’s dazzling. Eliza 😊
Thank you, Steve!
Oops, Sorry Belinda, my eyes jumped to the next comment, lol!
We’re both fans 😊
I love the deep yellow of the Goldenrod against the late summer purples. Beautiful arrangement!
Thank you, Rebecca!
Aah, lovely! Looks like summer is drawing to a close in your part of the world. Goldenrod is so striking in a vase. 😃
Thank you, Cathy. Yes, goldenrod speaks of late summer to me, however, I try not to let that fact dim my opinion of it!
Lush! and delicious. I know you have been enjoying the bounty. The astilbe threw me, I was wondering what in the world it was and came up with agastache! not. oh well.
Thanks, Amy. Very different from the spring astilbe, this one is furry and flowers in July in full sun.
Always a great way to make a vase. Beautiful meadowy vase that gladdens my heart.
Thank you, Donna! 🙂
What abundance, Eliza! How big is your “big garden”? I love the lavender, blue and yellow mix.
Thank you, Kris. My ‘big’ garden is the one off the back deck. Here it is: https://wp.me/p3O3z4-2LV
Beautiful 💐
Thank you, Karen!
Beautiful way to salvage the deadheaded material. I do not enjoy deadheading–always get to it way too late! Globe Thistle and phlox work well together.
Thank you, Susie. It certainly isn’t my favorite garden work. Looking rather bare out there now, evidence the season is winding down, alas.
Such a wonderful arrangement! The yellows and purples together are like bringing that “meadow feeling” into a vase, I think. There’s something so satisfying about deadheading…..
Cheers,
Julie
Thank you, Julie! I do love that meadow look. The garden is looking a bit bare now, past peak, alas. Feeling September-ish today!
Purple and gold — a sight to behold!
Thank you, Linda!
Ah, phlox. I did not recognize it. I met it only a few years ago, when it appeared within one of our landscapes. It has done well, and self sown a bit, without becoming invasive.
It is prone to powdery mildew, which I understand is a problem in your area, but breeders are working on resistant cultivars.
Ours does not seem to have a problem with it so far. It roasts at the end of the season, but I just assumed that was its natural response to the end of summer.
Thanks for sharing your gleanings with us!
My pleasure! 🙂
Absolutely fabulous
Thank you, Karina!
I loved this dramatic and bold arrangement, Eliza. When I clean up my garden it sure doesn’t look like this. 😉
😀 Thanks, Jet!
Absolutely GOR-GE-OUS 🎉🎊🤭
🙂 Thank you very much, Dawn!
Love how this looks like something gathered along wilderness trails and you have it all to enjoy in your yard and vase!🙂
Thanks, S, one thing I have here in great numbers, flowers galore!
A beautiful arrangement … very nice! 🙂
Thank you, Denise!
