In A Vase on Monday – Summer Mix

I went around cutting flowers that were bowed down by the deluges of rain we’ve been getting nearly every day. Yesterday, 1.5″ fell in a little over an hour, another inch today… and more tomorrow. And add that to the 8″ we received last week. I would love to share some with anyone whose weather has been on the dry side!

In the vase: feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus), oregano blossoms (Origanum vulgare), gooseneck loosestrife (Lysimachia clethroides), pink beebalm (Monarda didyma) and spiked speedwell (Veronica spicata), pink and white foxglove (Digitalis purpurea /alba).

Weird Wednesday – Eyed Click Beetle

The eyed click beetle, or eyed elater (Alaus oculatus), is common in the eastern U.S. It lives in deciduous forests, where the larvae grow in decaying logs, preying on longhorn beetle grubs. The adults can be 1¾ inches long.

The eyespots on the pronotum make predators hesitate to attack. The click beetle’s real eyes are much smaller and positioned behind the antennae, on the insect’s true head.

This very large beetle is a forester’s friend! I gently put him/her at the base of a tree. 🙂

In A Vase on Monday – Purple & Yellow

I’ve been absent from IAVOM for a while, mostly due to time constraints, but here is a vase I put together this weekend to celebrate the peak blooms of Catmint (Nepeta racemosa), Carolina lupine (Thermopsis villosa) and Sundrops (Oenothera fruticosa).

In A Vase on Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. Click the link to see what vases other gardeners have created this week and are posting from their gardens.

Weird Wednesday – Foxglove Fasciation

Fasciation is described as abnormal fusion and flattening of plant organs, usually stems, resulting in ribbon-like, coiled and contorted tissue. The growing tip or apical meristem of the plant, which normally produces cylindrical tissue, instead becomes elongated perpendicularly to the direction of the growth or it splays out to the sides. There are a number of possibilities as to why fasciation occurs that relate to hormonal, genetic, bacterial, fungal, viral and environmental causes.
