IAVOM – Purplicious

With so many purple/burgundy flowers blooming now in my garden, I felt the urge to do a purplicious arrangement.

In the vase: My favorite aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), Verbena bonariensis, flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata ‘Watercolors’), coleus foliage and bloom (Plectranthus scutellarioides), red lace flower (Ammi majus) and ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) foliage.

As long as the dahlias keep blooming, there will be pink arrangements, too. Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’ & ‘Pinelands Princess’, spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), Verbena bonariensis, cosmos (C. bipinnatus), flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata) and Zinnia elegans.

IAVOM – Zinnias and Dahlias

As you can see in the background, my garden is still filled with a good amount of flowers for making arrangements. How much longer before frost cuts them down is anyone’s guess, but I will enjoy them as long as possible.

While zinnias (Z. elegans) and dahlias (D. ‘Pinelands Princess’ and ‘Chilson’s Pride’) predominate this week’s arrangement, there are also flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata) and cosmos (C. bipinnatus).

IAVOM – Little Blue Jug

I bought this little, blue Villeroy & Boch Dresden Saxony milk jug at an antique store many years ago. It was chipped and priced accordingly, but I fell in love with its embossed cherries and lovely blue glaze, which still pleases me to this day.

A simple arrangement with just three types of flowers: Verbena bonariensis, somewhat snail-nibbled sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale) and garlic chives (Allium tuberosum).

IAVOM – Big and Little

At least once a summer, I get the itch to create a really large arrangement in one of my hefty vases. This blown glass beauty I brought back (very carefully as a carry-on) from a trip to Poland. The whole thing, top to bottom, measures roughly 30″ x 35″ (76 x 90 cm). Yup, it’s a biggie!

What’s in it: wild goldenrod (Solidago sp.) and woodland sunflower (Helianthus divaricata), and from the garden– beach sunflower (Helianthus debilis), four colors of spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata), Verbena bonariensis, Zinnia elegans, and a couple stems of triple-leaved foliage from Carolina lupine (Thermopsis villosa) and seed heads and foliage from bronze fennel (Foeniculum vulgare purpureum).

Then, for contrast, here are a couple of little vase arrangements from my kitchen windowsill. On the left, lime-green Nicotiana langsdorffii, purple Salvia greggii, and black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta). On the right, a mix of Cosmos bipinnatus and woodland sunflower (Helianthus divaricata).
