Silent Sunday – Frozen Water in Winter
This entry was posted in Field Notes, My Photos and tagged frozen falls, Ice, river ice, Silent Sunday, winter. Bookmark the permalink.

Still waters. 🙂
Ha, good one, Jim! Much quieter, too.
Very pretty!
Thank you, Sandy! Makes it worth getting out to enjoy it.
Ooh, that’s cold. Is that what they call white water rafting? 🤗🤣❤️🙏
Ha, frozen in mid-flow. We don’t even attempt to cross when it gets like this… treacherous footing!
I can imagine kind lady 🤗
This is something I could only imagine!
Being from the tropics, I have never experienced anything like this.
Thank you for sharing, Eliza 🙂
Thanks, Sreejith. Winter here can be so beautiful, but one really must dress warmly top to bottom in order to enjoy it!
Not at all a common sight for me, so I am enjoying these pictures from afar 🙂
Glad to share my chilly winter days, Anne!
Nice. I always like icy pictures. It’s been super cold here this week. Lethal to walk on our un-gritted side-roads. When my local reservoir completely and thickly freezes, that’s cold for us. I think we managed to get to minus 16 one night, which is more than a bit chilly for Yorkshire.
Thank you, Jill. That does sound cold. We normally get several weeks of below freezing weather in January. This past week it was the windchill that made it so unbearable to be out for more than a half an hour!
It looks so beautiful Eliza, hope you are keeping safe and warm too 🧡 xxx
Thank you, Xenia. Yesterday was the first day to break freezing since new year’s. We get to enjoy a few more days before it dips again. It is January after all. 🙂
Beautiful, Eliza. ♥
Thank you, Robin!
You live in such a lovely spot. It’s 22F. here this morning.
Wow, that is cold for you… we aren’t much colder than that, which is amazing. Thanks, Susie, stay warm!
Interesting to see just frozen water, without snow surrounding it…I’ll bet that changed, yesterday! Hoping the Bluebirds come back today!
Golly, it has been a cold week, and it’s not over yet, more cold/wind this week!
I’ve been hoping for a freeze strong enough to split the stems of our ‘ice plants,’ but the freeze line’s stayed just north and I haven’t gone lower than 30F. Even the bird baths haven’t frozen, so I’ll have to make do with your lovely photos!
Thanks, Linda. Glad to share. 🙂
Thank you for sharing Eliza! You are made of stronger stuff than me in winter. 🥶
Ha, my soul must have its daily airing! 😉
Love that thought!
I always enjoy seeing winter photos. The promised snow never made it this far south.
Small blessings. 🙂 Have you had a frost yet?
A light one the other morning. Some of my semi-tropicals took a hit, but they will come back with the hot weather.
So pretty. Hmm… methinks I shall go for a walk today, where I know a little river will be partially frozen…
Thanks, Dale. Glad to inspire… enjoy your outing!
It was beautiful but the river was snowed over!
At least the sun was out, it makes all the difference! 😎
That it was! And it does, indeed.
We’ve got plenty of places where the freeze has set in. If the sun comes out, things thaw a bit, but a foot of snow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon if we can’t have several days above 32 degrees. Pretty photos, Eliza.
Thank you, Debbie. A ‘real’ winter for a change. 🙂
Wow that is cold. We shall be going down to minus four at night and that’s bad enough for me!!
MJ
More cold and wind this week, I’m grateful for a few days with the temps around freezing before it comes roaring back. It surely is January!
Oooooh, ice formation photo ops!
It has been very cold, perfect for ice formation!
Pretty scenes! You don’t seem to have much snow either. We’ve been getting some, followed by a thaw 😏
Thank you, Belinda. We got a dusting yesterday morning as you see in the second photo. Not much snow this winter at all so far.
It’s like a magician’s trick!

A slow one, but yes. It will go from ice-free to covered over in about three days of -32º temps. An entertaining process to observe. 🥶
Magical. It must have been really cold for it to freeze up completely like that! Stay warm Eliza!
Thank you, Cathy. The wood stove keeps us very warm and I bundle up when I go out for my walk. January has been cold, like we used to get back in the day. What is odd is the fierce wind for days on end and no snow left after the last thaw. Not a good combo for plants!
Such a versatile element, water. 🙂
With the power to move mountains!
It always amazes me how lovely winter can be with snow on the ground. These are both lovely.
😊
Thank you, Pepper. I prefer some snow on the ground, as it doesn’t seem like winter without it. Tonight, the full moon’s reflection off of the dusting we got yesterday is lighting up the place almost as brightly as day!
Beautiful photos, Eliza!
Thank you, Rebecca!
That frozen waterfall is such a great image. Winter sure can provide some amazing photo taking opportunities!
Thank you, Monika. Winter can be quite beautiful and a joy to behold if one is dressed for it. 🙂
Totally agree. It’s a beautiful and generally very quiet season.
A wonderful meandering stream
Thank you, Karina! ❄️
Beautiful images, Eliza. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Beth, my pleasure!
That second still is like a film set 😍
What a lovely thought, thank you, Isha. I live in a slice of paradise, very grateful for that. 🙂
Looks like a lovely spot for a walk, with a hot chocolate afterwards to warm up!
Thanks, Adele. The kettle gets turned on as soon as we come in the door. 🙂
