    What a beautiful “puzzle” 🙂

  2. John's avatar John says:

An amazing image, Eliza, is this a fungi?

  3. sandyjwhite's avatar sandyjwhite says:

    Such a nice mosaic pattern.

  4. Ooh, that’s very cool looking.

Interesting. Barks (and tree trunk inhabitants) fascinate me.

Partly because of the way everything interacts. Sometimes it seems every living tree has a different bark. There are so many shapes, colours & textures.

(I once spent a whole afternoon photographing bark in the Royal Botanic Gardens here in Melbourne. It seemed like every 15 feet I walked there was something new to study).

Most tree species have unique bark, and the sycamore’s is particularly interesting and uniquely varied from tree to tree… a lot like fingerprints. 🙂

  6. I love Sycamore trees. You’ve highlighted a nice section of bark. Some trees have such uniform bark and then there are others like the Sycamore that are like great puzzles fitting all the pieces together.

  7. This is one part of trees that most people never notice… so glad you did, Eliza…

  8. Alice's avatar Alice says:

Amazing how a tree can grow such beautiful bark. I know of 2 huge old Sycamores…then there’s their fun pompoms. Pareidolia…there’s a dromedary on the left and other animals.

  9. Treah Pichette's avatar Treah Pichette says:

How gorgeous….it would make a great jigsaw puzzle!

When I think of our sycamores, I think of a smooth, white bark. Now I’m wondering if its more variegated than I’ve realized. This is lovely, although I don’t think I would have recognized it as bark.

  11. What an interesting and attractive pattern to the bark.

  12. Ellen's avatar Ellen says:

Like abstract art! What’s the bronze and gold bug in your masthead?

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

I was struck by the beauty of this tree’s bark and fired off a couple shots. The bug is a tarnished plant bug, also pretty, but not a farmer’s friend at all. 😦

  13. I instantly thought puzzle! 🙂

  14. It took a minute to figure out what I was looking at.

  15. Eliza, this is a gorgeous shot.

Hi Eliza. Very artistic. Makes me think of swirling water.

  17. I really like your beautiful header image and the photo of the Sycamore bark is stunning, Eliza!

This almost looks like camouflage! What an interesting capture, Eliza.

This was my dad’s favorite tree. I also really enjoy it. Happy Fathers Day dad, missing you deeply.

  20. Murtagh's Meadow's avatar Murtagh's Meadow says:

Wow that is a beautiful close up

  21. Kris P's avatar Kris P says:

I’d have never guessed that was bark! It’s pretty and interesting.

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thanks, Kris. Do you have sycamores there?

      • Kris P's avatar Kris P says:

There’s a California sycamore but it’s common to wetland areas. I’ve a vague recollection that Madrona Marsh may have some but I can’t claim they’re common in my own area and I don’t remember seeing mottled bark like that.

  22. I love trees I have so many Shag Bark Hickory which also has amazing bark.

  23. naturebackin's avatar naturebackin says:

Hi Eliza – what an interesting photo – without the title I would never have guessed. It makes an interesting textured abstract but could also resemble a high aerial photo of a strange landscape below!

  24. Donna Donabella's avatar Donna Donabella says:

    That is just so cool!

  26. Earthwatcher's avatar Earthwatcher says:

    Beautiful pattern. Thanks for sharing.

  27. I’m obviously not the first (or last) person to bring up the bark’s resemblance to a puzzle, but one’s mind can’t help but go for that analogy. It would be quite a challenging puzzle to complete, whereas the tree had no trouble.

  28. Great nature abstract!

  29. jillslawit's avatar jillslawit says:

I’d love to try doing a jigsaw of that.

  30. One of the prettiest tree barks around! Great capture.

  31. Jane Lurie's avatar Jane Lurie says:

Love this image, Eliza, but I bet that doesn’t surprise you.😉
