IAVOM – Exuberance

‘Exuberant’ pretty much describes my annual garden at this point in the season, with plants spilling into walkways needing to be tamed. Making my way around reminds me of pushing aside those beaded curtains of my hippie youth. 😂 The above arrangement is made from the slash I trimmed in an effort to take control of the situation.

Love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) continues to do its thing with flower stalks lengthening daily. I cut another offending branch to create a bit of space in the jungle and it is hardly missed. The half dozen flowering tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris) plants I sowed have grown massive as well, so I topped one to add to the arrangement. It has a delicate, sweet scent.

Wayward gloriosa daisies (Rudbeckia hirta), marigold (Calendula officinalis) and garden phlox (P. paniculata) also got trimmed. White cleome (C. hassleriana) and a few stems of goldenrod (Solidago sp.) from the field finished it.

IAVOM – Pink and Green

Pink and green is a favorite combination of mine, the brighter the better. Pink and creamy white Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’, sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) and both pink and white garden phlox (P. paniculata) contrast beautifully with the tightly budded, lime-green sedum flower heads (Hylotelephium spectabile) that will soon bloom. Feverfew adds a cheery note.

IAVOM – Going Wild

The annuals are starting to go a bit wild lately, happy with all the hot weather and sporadic rainfall, filling the garden beds to the point of bursting. A cloudburst Saturday evening pushed a few stems into the paths, so I decided to clip my way through and use the clippings for a vase. Love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) has such a funky flower, like red-pink dreadlocks, and the plant is over 6 feet tall.

Pink spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) and zinnia (Z, elegans ‘Aurora’) add bulk. While anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum), flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata) and seed heads of love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) add accent.

A second vase of natives offers an even wilder look in yellow-gold with a couple of blue accents: goldenrod (Solidago sp.), black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), woodland sunflower (Helianthus divaricata), yellow foxtail grass (Setaria sp.), anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) and seed heads of love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena).
