IAVOM – Recent Gleanings

With tender annuals long gone, it’s slim pickings in my garden, but I managed to gather a few things for a vase this week. Witch alder foliage (Fothergilla major) shines this time of year, and I couldn’t resist clipping a bit for its bold color. A stem of daisy mums (Dendranthema), burgundy stonecrop ‘Autumn Joy’ flower heads (Hylotelephium telephium ‘Herbstfreude’), sage foliage (Salvia officinalis) and Nigella papillosa seedheads in a celadon vase.

And a handful of marigold blooms (Calendula officinalis), gently burnished by frost, in a vintage blue cherry milk pitcher.

IAVOM – Post-Frost #3

On October 10, we had our first heavy frost, ending all tender plants in my garden. As I do every year, I gathered all useable blooms the day before, put them into vases, took photos, then placed the arrangements throughout the house to enjoy. (Most are now in the compost!) To share them with you, I featured my first two vases two weeks ago, my second two last Monday, ending today with my last installment.

One bright red zinnia (Z. elegans ‘Sprite’) accompanies yellow and orange marigolds (Calendula officinalis) in a cluster of several bronze fennel blooms, as well as a black-eyed susan (Rudbeckia hirta), a nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) sprig, Verbena bonariensis and flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata and N. langsdorffii).

The above stoneware pitcher is filled with daisies of feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and garden mums (Dendranthema), lavender aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium) pink, purple and white spider flower (Cleome hassleriana) and flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata and N. langsdorffii).

Walktober – 2025

Walktober is an annual October event where we take ourselves outside to enjoy all that Nature offers and then share it on our blog. Anyone can join in and do the same, it’s open to all, including your pets!

My favorite place to walk year ’round is our own 7.5 acres. After 35 years, our trails are well-worn and the route never gets old, as there are delights for all the senses around each and every bend. Enjoy the slideshow below as you join us on the trail.

IAVOM – Post-Frost #2

On October 10, we had our first frost, a heavy one that ended all tender plants in my garden. As I do every year, I gathered all useable blooms the day before, put them into vases, took photos and then placed the arrangements throughout the house to enjoy. To share them with you, I featured my first two vases last Monday, my second post today and there will be another next week.

The above vase is a beloved one that I bought from a potter in New Hampshire over 40 years ago. She had changed her technique and I was fortunate to get one of the last in her old style of glazing. The flowers are: Dahlias, red ‘Debora Renae’, yellow ‘Lemonade’ and pink ‘Chilson’s Pride,’ Zinnia elegans ‘Aurora’, Nicotiana alata (right foreground) and Nicotiana x sanderae ‘Select Watercolor’ in back. Filler is feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium).

My second vase has pink Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’, spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), and Zinnia angustifolia ‘Profusion Cherry Bicolor’.
