IAVOM – Let’s Party!

I went big this week, hauling out my tallest vase to accommodate some long stems that I had the urge to cut and put on display up close.

Providing a focal point, the deep burgundy Dahlia ‘Debora Renae’ matches the love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) flowing down the sides. Dahlias ‘Lemonade’ and ‘Ice Tea’ then add drinks to the party! All three dahlias are new to me this year.

Golden sneezeweed (Helenium autumale), looking like floppy sun hats, add a bit of fun. White garden phlox (P. paniculata) and dancing spider flowers (Cleome hassleriana), along with sprays of purple Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia, syn. Salvia yangii) add a celebratory finish to the arrangement. Too bad I didn’t have party hat props for Cathy!

IAVOM – Warm and Rosy

Warm colors continue to dominate my choice of vase materials, as rich red and carmine catch and hold my eye. In a rose glass vase, I’ve put a sprig of red coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides), cascading love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus), cherry zinnia (Z. angustifolia ‘Cherry Profusion’), pink-bicolor spider flower (Cleome hassleriana) and a few stems of purple vervain (Verbena bonariensis).

A second vase features yellow, orange and purple hues– marigold (Calendula officinalis), orange zinnia (Z. elegans ‘Aurora’), orange cosmos (C. sulphureus), purple vervain (Verbena bonariensis), love-in-a-mist seed heads (Nigella papillosa), a sprig of feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and bronze fennel foliage (Foeniculum vulgare).

IAVOM – Exuberance

‘Exuberant’ pretty much describes my annual garden at this point in the season, with plants spilling into walkways needing to be tamed. Making my way around reminds me of pushing aside those beaded curtains of my hippie youth. 😂 The above arrangement is made from the slash I trimmed in an effort to take control of the situation.

Love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) continues to do its thing with flower stalks lengthening daily. I cut another offending branch to create a bit of space in the jungle and it is hardly missed. The half dozen flowering tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris) plants I sowed have grown massive as well, so I topped one to add to the arrangement. It has a delicate, sweet scent.

Wayward gloriosa daisies (Rudbeckia hirta), marigold (Calendula officinalis) and garden phlox (P. paniculata) also got trimmed. White cleome (C. hassleriana) and a few stems of goldenrod (Solidago sp.) from the field finished it.

IAVOM – Pink and Green

Pink and green is a favorite combination of mine, the brighter the better. Pink and creamy white Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’, sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) and both pink and white garden phlox (P. paniculata) contrast beautifully with the tightly budded, lime-green sedum flower heads (Hylotelephium spectabile) that will soon bloom. Feverfew adds a cheery note.
