IAVOM – Iris Plus

Bearded Iris (I. germanica) have dominated the garden this week and I’m enjoying my root beer-colored cultivar (a passalong, so no ID), as well as a new edition: ‘Champagne Elegance.’ Also in the vase are a couple soon-to-pass Allium atropropureum, and a few lamb’s ears (Stachys byzantina) budded stems.

Graceful Siberian iris (I. sibirica) are also blooming, here with (white with red markings) Caucasian cranesbill (Geranium renardii), oxeye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare), catmint (Nepeta racemosa), lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis), lamb’s ears (Stachys byzantina), seed heads of garden myrrh (Myrris odorata) and brome grass (Bromus sp.).

I can get lost in these falls! 🤩

Silent Sunday – A Few Things

IAVOM – Aquilegia & Allium

While working in the garden, I accidentally snapped off a bud near the top of a stem of honey garlic (Allium siculum). Rather than discard it, I figured I could at least enjoy the opening flowers if I found a sturdy holder. The ikebana vase worked perfectly, as it has three cylinders inside in which to place stems. Going with the burgundy-striped centers, in addition, I chose dark columbine (Aquilegia sp.) and a few leaves of purple smokebush (Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’) placed at the base.

IAVOM – Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day in the US, a day when we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. As I age, the day seems more poignant, the sacrifice too great. My heart goes out to those who have lost a loved one, the grief never really ends.

I attempted to find red, white and blue flowers for a patriotic color scheme. White: bearded iris (I. germanica), double-file viburnum (V. plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Mariesii’) and star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum). Burgundy/Pink: Columbine (Aquilegia sp.), red maple foliage (Acer rubrum), finishing with pink bleeding hearts (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) and blue forget-me-nots (Myostis sylvatica) to add to the remembrance theme.

IAVOM – Allium Time

Purple globes of allium (A. atropurpureum) started blooming this week in my large garden, so I had to cut a few to feature this week, along with Johnny-jump-ups (Viola tricolor), white forget-me-nots (Myosotis sylvatica) and a few furry lamb’s ears (Stacys byzantina).
