  1. What an amazing capture, Eliza. Well done.

  2. Haha, that is brilliant Eliza. The face on the back of its head is indeed like a surprised fairy. Great picture kind lady 🤗❤️🙏

Hi Eliza. Well if that’s not weird I don’t know what is!! Looks like it’s face is on the back of it’s head.

I was so taken by the design on its abdomen (or wing covers?) I nearly missed the face. It looks as though it might have been saying to the photographer, “Don’t shoot!” I’m glad you did!

Oh my, what a cute creature with that funny little face! Thanks for showing me something new.

    • Eliza Waters's avatar Eliza Waters says:

Thanks, I saw it eat a crumb on the deck, which made a nice breakfast for it, took its picture before lifting to the railing where it flew away, its wings looking like a mini-praying mantis. Fun stuff!

  10. Not having heard of this species, I looked it up. According to BugGuide, it has “reddish-brown head and foreparts, usually fading to pale yellowish toward rear. Female has two elongated blackish spots on tegmen (forewings). Hind tibiae do not have spines. Basal segment of antenna has a blunt tooth on the outer side.”

  11. A good fairy, I hope. A little bit of summer magic. Great capture, Eliza!

  12. OMG that face! I will keep my glasses off while strolling in the rain 🙂

Nicely captured, Eliza! Talk about the “deer in headlights” expression!

  17. I have never seen one. Very interesting color.

A rare capture! An insect that’s more often heard than seen. The last time I saw one it was browsing on tansy, a number of years back.

Thanks, Tom. I had a faint idea what it was, but figured its ID out thanks to Bugguide.net

I know a photographer who published sound recordings of crickets a few years back. I started paying more attention to them and noticing them sometimes. There’s a nice book about crickets and katydids you might find at a library: Vincent Dethier: Crickets and Katydids, Concerts and Solos.

I sometimes listen to cricket, katydid and bird recordings in the depths of winter. Always a mood lifter!

  19. Very cool, great shot!!😎
