wow.
🙂 Thanks, Cindy!
Excellent colour co-ordination here 🙂
Thanks, Anne. Happy seedeaters!
She’s a beauty!
Thank you, Flavia! 🙂
Gorgeous plumage
Thank you, Sheree. His glow is hard to miss!
Indeed Eliza
His summer plumage makes him a stand-out. They’ve been snacking on my Zinnias and eating yummy bird seed anytime of day. (this post was in my junk mail 🤔)
Yes, besides sunflowers, they have been gleaning seed from my anise hyssop, catnip, zinnias, poppies, globe thistle and woodland sunflower. We aim to please!
Sharing with special friends!
Aww what a sweet guest Eliza! 💛 xxx
Thank you, Xenia. And very talkative, too! 😉
And, a mighty handsome guest he is.
For sure, they really are a gorgeous bird in summer. Like northern garden canaries!
What a fabulous image worthy of being framed. 😊
Aw, thanks so much, Pepper!
Love the color coordination-a beautiful capture, Eliza.
Thank you, Monika. They surely do love those sunflower seeds!
We have lots of goldfinches around our house. Love the color and the way they twitter.
Yes, they are quite vocal and the males’ undulating courtship flights are so fun to watch… so exuberant!
I am hoping to see a yellow one. They wintered in Texas and were more olive colored.
Sunflowers are irresistible to them– they show up every year, right in time for the harvest!
Beautiful Eliza. I could do that breakfast any day 🤗❤️🙏
Thank you, Mark. They are lovely birds!
Beautiful! Sunflowers and goldfinches were made for one another. 🌻
Thank you, Barbara. It seems so! They do love them. 🙂
I usually see the goldfinches in their winter garb, rather than this beautiful yellow. However! Last week there was a flash of brillant yellow at my feeder on just one day, and I’m thinking it might have been a wandering goldfinch. Lucky you to have them!
Thank you, Linda. We have them year round, but as we don’t put seed feeders out in summer, it is only as seeds become available around the yard do they return. Their vocalizations and swooping flight are so fun to watch.
Oh! how lovely!
Thank you, Dawn!
We have special wildlife neighbors here in W MA!
For sure, I love listening their chittering as they feed in and around the garden. They love their seeds!
🤗 wonderful capture 💚🍃🌻
Thank you, Susan!
We have many Goldfinches right now. They are so colorful and fun to watch!
The males are so beautiful and vocal, too. Always chittering away!
Yes, they seem to know they are quite handsome!
Very handsome! We generally see lesser goldfinches here (terrible name!) but I’ve seen few this year, probably because I’ve stopped filling my feeders during the summer months. That’s kept the squirrels and peacocks away too, which is a good thing 😉

Thank you, Kris. We also stop the seed bird feeders once spring arrives, but to attract bluebirds, we put out dried mealworms, which also attract titmice, wrens and chickadees. Seeing the bluebirds feeding their young is so worth it!
Such a welcome guest!
Indeed, and a handsome one at that! 🙂
Cute!
Thank you, Alys!
… with a perfect perch! Sweet shot 😊
Thank you, Belinda!
A welcome visitor, what a lovely pose and capture. Maybe it’s disappointed there aren’t any seeds to peck out yet?
Thanks, Tom. I’ve found they will eat as soon as the seeds are ready, plump and juicy, no hard shells to deal with. 🙂
Great shot Eliza! Our goldfinches are after the thistle seedheads already. 😃
Thanks, Cathy. Birds know when the crop is ripe for picking!
Glad to see you capture one as well doing his thing!
They really shine this time of year!
Now for just a tad more rain 🙂
Do they get their yellow from eating yellow flowers and fruit?
Not sure! 🙂
Here’s what ChatGPT answered:
“Goldfinches get their yellow color from their diet, specifically from pigments called carotenoids found in the seeds and plants they eat.
Carotenoids are organic pigments produced by plants, and goldfinches consume them through seeds from plants like sunflowers, dandelions, and thistles. The birds’ bodies then metabolize these pigments and deposit them into their feathers, especially during molting, when new feathers grow.
Without access to carotenoid-rich food, goldfinches would appear much duller in color. So their bright yellow hue is directly linked to both nutrition and health—a well-fed goldfinch will typically be more vibrantly colored.”
Thanks for the info!
That is one cute breakfast guest!
Isn’t he? Quite a conversationalist, too! 🙂
