Having gleaned my garden of all viable blooms last week ahead of expected frosts, I made several arrangements and will post one or two a week in order to join the IAVOM meme for a couple more posts. The expected frosts did come nearly every night and finished my gardening year, alas, making these vases all the more pleasurable to me.
Here is #2: A mix of pink Zinnia elegans, Dahlia ‘Chilson’s Pride’, white yarrow (Achillea millefolium), with accents of a few sprigs of cigar plant (Cuphea ignea ‘Vermillionaire’) and hummingbird mint (Agastache ‘Poquito’).

It still looks like summer.
Does yarrow naturalize?
Oh, yes, at least the white does. The colored hybrids only spread by runners, and some not so much anymore. I guess spreading was one of its pitfalls. 😉
Pitfalls? I wanted it to expand within one of the landscapes where we installed it a few years ago, but it is rather slow about doing so. It seems to migrate close to where it already is and only by stolons. I have not seen any grow from seed away from the originals. Although it is native, I do not see it outside of the landscape.
At least it was until frost came to visit!
Beautiful and they look happy and healthy.
Thank you, Rupali. Soon to become a happy memory. 😉
Nice arrangement
Thank you, Sheree!
The zinnias are so pretty on a vase eh? And they seem to last a while too…are these still looking good inside?
Thanks, Chris. I go through the bouquets daily, but of course, there is less by the day. About half are left.
We are being spoiled today, so many lovely flowers to brighten our day!
Thank you, glad to share! 💕
🌺🌸🌼
They are still speaking well Eliza 🤗❤️🙏
Thanks, Mark 🙂
beautiful!!!!!
Thank you, Dymoon!
Look at that! When I showed the unusual Cuphea viscosissima in my current post, I’d never heard of the genus — and here you are with another example! Cool — and a beautiful vase!
Thank you, Linda. Cigar plant has been a popular houseplant for years and has been hybridized for annual bedding sales in the past decade. Very popular with hummers, too!
Love the pinks 💖🩷💝
Thank you, Susan!
A beautiful vase, in the count-down.
& the Hummingbirds would 💗 those flowers!
Indeed they would, I miss them already. Thanks, Alice!
You will be able to enjoy them a bit longer in your house.
Indeed. Makes the frost easier to take. 🙂
Beautiful bouquet. Love the white pumpkin header.
Thank you, Monika. I grew those gourds several years ago… I had SO many!
Very, very nice–the flower/foliage combinations and the vase, itself. Lovely!

Thank you, Beth!
Oh I am sorry frost has come. We were spared somehow. Warming up. I love this vase and the colors on the vase and in it complementing each other. Beautiful pink, salmon shades.
Thank you, Donna. I think the full moon made it extra chilly. 🥶
Sweeter still because it’s the last call.
Gleaning eases the loss of the garden… I get to enjoy the flowers a wee bit longer. 🥰
I, too, am glad you thought ahead and saved these gorgeous arrangements. You know, something about this one says “wedding” to me. Those colors would make stunning bridesmaids’ dresses!
Ooh, yes, that color would be a great! Thanks, Debbie!
I’d briefly forgotten that you’d put photos aside to document your last call before frost hit and thought you’d received a reprieve! Today’s arrangement is indeed a beautiful bow to the change of seasons. I’m wishing I’d realized last week that I had my own last call – or something approaching that – in the wings in the form of SoCal’s “devil winds,” which kicked up late last week.

Thanks, Kris. Would those be the Santa Ana’s? Dry and fierce. 🌬️
I am always torn between having a mix of zinnias, or specific colours – in theory I prefer the latter, but if they don’t perform well, then I have lost out altogether, whereas a mix seems more likely to have at least some successes… 😉 I really like the pale pink one in your vase!! I am so sorry your gardening year is ‘finished’ now – are your winters very cold? Do remind me where you are… Thanjs for soraeding out these last few vases of yours – they are always so bright and cheerful
I generally like a mix of zinnia colours and types, so I can use a variety of vases. This year I did buy a pack of creamy yellow and was pleased with it.
We generally have snowy winters in New England with Jan. being coldest (-25C) at night for a week. It used to be colder with weeks never getting above freezing, but CC has given us much milder winters.
Thanks, Cathy!
Ah, I can easily place New England! I remember one night here (just one!) of -25 here in the winter of 78/79, and weeks of freezing temperatures in 62/63, but they were exceptiional, even in those days. As you say, it’s generally very different these days. And yes! I remember your yellow zinnia from previous vases – so striking!
It’s that’s time again. That time to relax out of the heat 😌
Yes, I used to love summer, but with temps rising, I now appreciate the cooler seasons much more.
Really beautiful Eliza. The zinnias are lovely colours, and nice large blooms too. And what forethought, making lots of vases for future posts. 😃 Our frosts have been very light so far, so I even still have a cosmos and some sunflowers, sheltered by their neighbours.
Thank you, Cathy!
Wonderful. Fantastic zinnias! They look huge. I like the color combination with the vase.
Thank you, Amy. The zinnias were ‘Super Sprite’ and ‘Giant Cactus’ so some were larger than others. The plants themselves grew taller than me, when the package said 4′, and really, my soil isn’t THAT good. 😉
Your garden sure went out on a high note, Eliza 😊
How kind of you to say, Belinda, thank you! 🙂
You were so smart to plan ahead and what a gorgeous arrangement, Eliza. Great photo angle too.
Thank you, Susie! 💕
A lovely arrangement! We’re so lucky to have cameras so we can look back and enjoy flowers again at other times.
For sure 🙂 Thanks, Barbara!
Good planning! I only dream of having such a bounty of zinnias, I never seem to do it right.
Thanks, Tracy. I plant a couple different packets because I love them so. One can never have too many, they make great gifts!
Those are beautiful flowers and the colour combination works so well. Now you have given me an idea, plan arrangements for future weeks….
Thank you, Noelle. I had so many arrangements (10!), that I picked a few to photograph to share in the next few weeks.
So beautiful. I love the splash of white Yarrow in there. I often take it for granted but seeing this should really use it more. It is so prolific beyond the garden gate that iI often ignore it which is bad of me as I love the pink and terra cotta varieties. The vase is perfect.

Thank you, Jenny!
It’s been a wonderful gardening year, thank you for sharing all the beauty!🙂
Thank you, S!
Beautiful! I love zinnias. They remind me of my late father-in-law who would always send me home with a bouquet from his garden.
Thank you, Denise. My mother used to grow them in front of our house when I was little, so a similar fond memory. 💕
