Wordless Wednesday – Mares’ Tails
This entry was posted in Field Notes, My Photos and tagged cirrus uncinus cloud, clouds, Mare's Tails, nature photography, Wordless Wednesday. Bookmark the permalink.

Wings and wisps. The caption prompted me to look up the different types of cirrus clouds; didn’t know there were so many!
Clouds can be so beautiful, I’ve always been a fan. Thanks, Audrey. 🙂
I love them, like a caress to the soul. Thank you kind lady 🤗❤️🙏
My pleasure, Mark.
There are strong winds high up!
Yes, these range 20-25K ft. up where it is quite cold. I saw quite a few large ones like this last week. I think they might have been from the effect of Hurricane Helene pushing the atmosphere ahead of it, but I am no expert.
Gorgeous
Thank you, Sheree!
So beautiful! Like we could run our fingers through and along them.
Thank you, Dale. These were so dramatic, reminding me of candy floss.
Yes! That’s exactly what they look like!
Who doesn’t love wispy clouds? I pursued the Latin word uncinus:
“Translated from latin meaning hook, the ‘uncinus’ cloud species is found only in the cirrus cloud type. No other cloud type besides a cirrus cloud can be classified as uncinus.”
Thanks, Steve. I knew you’d like that!
I learned to call them ‘mares’ tails’ from my midwestern grandmother. I learned to love them as a sign of fair weather somewhat later!
Yes, before there were satellites and forecasters, we had to read the sky ourselves. We always said that it meant a change and rain was coming. 🙂
…it look like an angel…
…looks…
Yes, I saw that, too. 🪽
Galloping across the sky!
Indeed, they have been amazing this past week!
Rain’s a-comin’ !
Yup! 😉
So pretty.
Thank you, Monika. I love this type of cloud. 🙂
Wow! What a mare! Wonderful shot!
Thank you, Hien. The clouds this past week have been amazing.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Donna!
So pretty!
Truly! 🙂
Wispy wins the day! Great capture, Eliza!
Thank you, Tina!
Lovely! I’ve always been a fan of looking skyward!
Thank you, Debbie! Ditto! 🙂
Such a pretty display! I haven’t seen them here in quite some time. One one occasion, though, they appeared shot with color, which I understand is caused by ice crystals.

We’ve been having a lot of these recently, but oddly, little rain which they usually portend. Still, very cool to see!
Pretty cloud formations, nicely spotted and captured.
Thanks, Tom!
I love to look for shapes in the clouds.
It is a fun pastime, and its good to stop for a moment to appreciate our lovely world. 🙂
You captured some lovely cloud patterns!
Thank you, Belinda. These were so dramatic!
NICE! I haven’t seen any mare’s tails around here lately. Maybe more so in the winter?
Thanks much! Ours can happen any time of year, but I guess they mainly occur when there is an atmospheric shift, resulting in wet weather.
So nice!!!!
Thank you, Belladonna!
