Silent Sunday – Katydid

What did Katy do?
That is the question, isn’t it? 😉
Nice!
🙂💚 Cool shot, Eliza!
Thank you, Jane!
I don’t know. Given the look in Katy’s eye, maybe she didn’t.
Ha, yes! 😀
Is it my imagination or is there a minute creature – or remnant of one – on its back? These are a beautiful photographs.
Thank you, Anne. I was curious about that as well and zoomed in…it appears to be dried bits from its last molt.
Thank you!
Katydid indeed visit you Eliza, and a close up at that. I hope it was a quick stopover though and she didn’t eat all your plants did she? 🤗🤣❤️🙏
Thanks, Mark. I think the birds ate a lot of nymphs in the early summer, because the night calls seem less than in previous years. It is a nice bedtime serenade.
Each and every part of nature a gift indeed kind lady…er, except maybe a night caller we have here that screams through the night in its mating call. Sleep comes but raggedly, if at all in the heat. But, it could be cats fighting, cars honking or a million other things. I’m alive and grateful to be so in this delightful adventure called life 🤗❤️🙏
🙏🏼
Brilliant images! Well taken👍. Thank you for sharing them. Kind regards…Jay😊
Thank you, Jay!
You are welcome😊
Great image – love close up too. Very much who is watching who
Thanks, Karina. Yes, it seemed very aware of me, but let me come pretty close. Probably still a bit chilled from the night.
Great shot
Merci, Sheree!
Aww what a sweetie Eliza and a lovely capture 💚 xxx
Thank you, Xenia! 🙂
Always so happy to see these…3 adult females, so far, this year. Everything about them is so unique and purposeful, but exaggerated in size.
A cool insect for sure. Thanks, Alice!
Wonderful close-up! We have them here, too.
They are rather comical to watch, and I love hearing them at night. One of those sweet sounds of summer.
Wow! Great shot!
Thank you, Robin!
I’ve been seeing these guys around a lot lately. I find them very cartoon-like! 🙂
Aren’t they the cutest? Love that face. 🙂
Amazing macro shots, Eliza.
Thank you, Monika. Such a cute morning visitor. 🙂
Such detail Eliza! Did you shoot that with a regular phone?
Yes, amazing how well it came out. (I’ve become so lazy about getting out the Nikon, ugh!) Thanks, Maria!
Hi Eliza. Aren’t they gorgeous? Somehow so endearing.
MJ
Thank you, MJ. I also find them endearing, I love that face!
That’s a great closeup, Eliza. I find it challenging to “separate” katydids from their surroundings long enough to get a real portrait!
Thank you, Debbie. This one on the white railing in the early morning was in the perfect place for a photo 🙂
Very nice, Eliza!
Thank you, Belinda!
I just love these leaf-colored critters. I learned only recently that their name is onomatopoeic, but I don’t recall if I have actually heard them knowingly.
Here is what they sound like: https://youtube.com/shorts/R-hgbgAdOk0?si=6NSvB4X3Vol-bnLn
I find the nymphs in the garden, but the adults are usually in trees, though like this one here, they can be seen on and around the house.
Thank you, Eliza. I listened to a recording before I wrote my comment, just to double-check. I have no recollection of hearing them, even though I have seen them around here occasionally.
Great shots, I like the macro one. They call them “esperanzas” here.
I’m wondering ‘Hope’ or ‘Expectation’ for what?
It’s a colloquial name, plain superstition. In Latin countries the commonly seen katydid grasshoppers are called esperanzas; the green ones mean good luck is coming, while the brown ones mean that good luck has arrived.
I was reading the nymph katydids are brown before turning green, but other ones are brown all throughout their lives.
Thank you, Maria.
Are the katydids as voracious as grasshoppers?
https://krispgarden.blogspot.com/
They are herbivores, but I never see them other than random individuals, so a few leaves or petals may be nibbled, but not like what beetles are capable of.
Nice portrait! 🦗
Hmm… that emoji was green when I clicked on it…
🙂
Thanks, Barbara!
My favorite bug. Love them and their late summer song!
Me, too. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik!
My brother just sent me a photo of one from PA. They are out and about.
Yes, this is their season. A lovely end-of-summer sound.
Amazing ☘️☘️☘️
Thanks, Karen. I find insects rather amazing, too!
Cool! I’ve been hoping to see one this season, not yet!
They are cool insects to observe– thanks, Tom!
You have the advantage of color compared to the cover of What Katy Did.
