Japanese anemones (Eriocapitella x hybrida) have begun to bloom in earnest and I picked several stems as the basis of this week’s vase.

Also included: white, dark and light pink cosmos (C. binpinnatus), Dahlia ‘Pinelands Princess’ and “Chilson’s Pride,’ white and pink spider flower (Cleome hassleriana), pink-backed flowering tobacco (Nicotiana alata), Angelonia angustifolia, anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) and Verbena bonariensis. Foliage is pink-tinged Rhododendron that is reminding me that fall is only a month away, yikes! 😱

Gorgeous, soft color palette!
Thank you, Sandy!
Japanese anemones are lovely flowers, one of my favourites! You have some lovely flowers in your garden..😊
Thank you very much! 🙂
How many shades of pink are there Eliza 🤗🤣❤️🙏
IKR? LOTS!
Oh, Japanese anemone. I notice that others have posted pictures of theirs also. I am determined to grow it. One happens to inhabit one of our landscapes, but is not happy about it. Before I try to bring in a new Japanese anemone, I should put what is already here into a situation where it might be happier.
They like even moisture, so they might need extra water, not easy to provide in your climate.
Just about everything here is irrigated anyway. I suspect that the aridity and consumptive redwoods may annoy it. (I noticed it blooming nicely within a more coastal climate near Oakland.) The bit that survives within one of our landscapes is a remnant from when that part of the landscape was more flowery, with Canna, Dahlia, and all sorts of froufrou flowers. Redwoods are sneaky about dispersing roots throughout such generously irrigated areas. I can not change the humidity, but I can relocate some of the Japanese anemone away from redwoods. They seem to be satisfied with the minimal chill here.
Fall is only a month away? Hooray! I don’t think I could have named any of these flowers, but they certainly combine well!
Thank you, Linda. I figured my western/southern friends will be very happy to welcome fall. Stay cool. 😎
The differing hues in this vase are refresingly beautiful.
Thank you very much, Anne!
Love the color palette.
Thank you, Ilze!
You are welcome!
Beautiful.
Thank you, Rupali!
Absolutely delightful Eliza 💐🙏🥰
Thank you, Val! 💜
Such a pretty combination. Although pink is not my absolute favorite color—that would be blue—I do believe it is my favorite color for a bouquet. Of course, that could change with your next lovely arrangement. 😉
🙂 Thank you, Laurie. I try to mix up my arrangements, next week will be different yet again!
So pretty!
Thank you, Barbara!
Are the stalks of your Japanese anemone’s taller then ever this year? We’ve had so much rain – mine have also started to bloom and they’re about five feet high! I really love your soft, almost Easter-ish, colour palette this week.
Thank you, Chris. Mine seem to be average-sized, but we haven’t had as much rain as we did last summer. However, they are spreading…will have to divide this fall!
Love those pinks! Cleomes bloom in the early spring here and mine are done. Anemones will not bloom until later this fall. The same plants on a different schedule.
Thanks much. My cleome are seeding all over and I really should minimize that before I have a crazy amount of seedlings to hoe under next spring!
My Dad had the same thing with his and came up with the idea of throwing seeds along the highway. I talked him down from that idea.
A profusion of pink petals. So many gorgeous blooms.
Thank you, Alice!
Pinkness!! Lovely 🥰🩷🌸
Yes! 🙂 Thanks, Susan!
I really like the nicotiana—I haven’t seen that one.
Thank you, Ellen. Self-sown for years, most of them are plain white, but a few have pink backs– some throwback gene, I guess.
Very impressive, Eliza! I titled my own IAVOM post “Abundance” but your arrangement outshines mine. I’m amazed to see Japanese anemones this early but then your climate is notably different from mine 😉 The foliage on my anemones is already fried so I’m not sure I’ll see any flowers this year.

Thank you, Kris. It is really hard for me to limit my selection for a vase… I gravitate towards abundance, I guess, as opposed to simplicity. 😉
I’m told that J. anemones respond to day length, so we’re late August bloomers here. The sun is already setting at 7:30! 😦
So beautiful! Love all those pink hued tones.
Thank you, Monika!
Oh more pinks. I love all the shades that work together so well.
Thank you, Donna. It seems to be a popular color this week!
I love, love, love this vase! Pink is my very favorite color! And Japanese anemones and cosmos are among my very favorite flowers! Beautiful!
Thank you, Kimberley, so glad you found it pleasing. I was happy with how it came out. 🙂
What lovely soft pinks and a real mix in your vase too – it’s good to spend some time studying it and working out which is which. I am going to try an autumn sowing of cleome as I have had no success sowing it in the spring
Thank you, Cathy. Mine always come up faithfully in their own time every spring. I wish you luck!
Thanks
Another lovely arrangement, Eliza! There’s something about it which signals that Fall is on its way (perhaps the darker-colored posies and the leaves??)
Thank you, Debbie. We’ve been having cooler temps this month and it is beginning to show, esp. in the trees.
Pink delight with dahlias, yum!
🙂 Thank you, Amy!
Still looks very summery. Lovely!
Thanks, Belinda. Yes, it still feels summery, but for the shorter days. I expect we’ll have a good two more months before the garden season ends. I’ll take it! 😉
Blushing with pink, especially the dark pink cosmos, pretty arrangements. I have Japanese anemone as well, love the flowers, but I have to pull out lots of it each year to keep it from taking over.
Thank you, Tom. Yes, it can take over quite a bit of territory!
At least it’s easy to pull.
The Japanese anemones proved to be a delightful starting point, Eliza. I’ve never grown them but they are so beautiful. All the pinkish supporting flowers are just beautiful.
Thank you, Susie. Collecting and arranging flowers in a vase is such a lovely meditation.
Wow!!!
🙂 Thanks, Gary!
Pure Summer! Some beautiful shades of pink Eliza. The Cleome are so lovely, I really must try growing them again next year. I had never heard of that botanical name for Japnese anemones. Have they changed that as well?!
Thank you, Cathy. I’m enjoying the range of colors this summer, the self-sowers have a nice variety. Change is constant in nature and plant nomenclature!
What a wonderful assortment of flowers and maybe my favorite of the summer!! I know I’ve been talking about fall for awhile, but I’m also surprised how fast August has went by and that it’s almost here.🙂
Thanks much. I am rather alarmed at how fast the first 3 weeks of August have flown. I am not ready for the end of summer!
That’s a gloriously delicate pink on the Japanese anemone – but when did they change their name?!! I’m so behind the times, but really enjoyed your hugely successful pink palette!
Thank you, Cathy. Name changed in 2018, but I guess it takes a while to get through the grapevine. Like the rest of the new ones, this isn’t easy to remember either!
Another gorgeous vase.
Thank you, Alys. 🙂
Such a beautiful arrangement ~ I’m always a bit awed by those who can take flowers (already stunning on their own), and create something otherworldly… my Mom is such a person as well 🙂 Well done, Eliza.
Thank you, Randall. It is a creative joy that I love sharing. 🙂
